Free Music Notes for Dedication the Very Best ofFree Music Review: Thin Lizzy - A Decent Collection But Several Albums Not Represented Hit: 4 Stars
There are a number of good Thin Lizzy collections out there and this single disc set from the early 90's is a pretty good representation of what the band were all about. The disc contains 18 tracks from the band's early Irish roots, through their second to last album "Chinatown". Unfortunately there are quite a few albums that are not represented here including their final most metallic album "Thunder And Lightning". This would probably be a good disc for someone just discovering the music of Lizzy. The few hits that they had in the U.S. are here (namely "Boys Are Back In Town" and "Cowboy Song"), and there are a lot of good album tracks. In fact if anything this collection shows how much versatility Thin Lizzy had. The music is literally all over the place with the boys pulling it all off with aplomb. Lizzy is another one of the bands that really were overlooked here in the US. They were the starting point for a veritable who's who of guitarists including Eric Bell, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, Snowy White, and John Sykes. All of them were top of the line players. I only got to see them live once as an opening act, but looking back these guys were innovators in a lot of ways and they should have been bigger than they ever got.
Free Music Review: Fantastic Music - but not all their best! Hit: 4 Stars
Thin Lizzy put together some great songs. They are remembered for Phil and his poetry as well as the great lead guitar work. They also had one of the best drummers in rock music and some of the best rhythm guitar around. Beside having such great musicians, they jelled together so well to define the Lizzy sound. I find their music to be quite magical. The album starts with Eric Bell on 2 songs, and he really rips it up on "The Rocker". 12 songs cover the period when the guitar duet of Brian 'Robbo' Robertson and Scott Gorham defined the Thin Lizzy twin lead guitar sound. Gary Moore is Featured on 2 songs and Snowy White on 1. Lastly Scott Gorham and Brian Downey finished the track 'Dedication' previosly recorded by Phil when he was with Grand Slam. The album leaves holes. No songs from "Thunder and Lightning" with John Sykes (The last of the Thin Lizzy guitar masters), or "Renegade" nor the first two albums. This album covers a good layout of songs with the limited time. I once recorded my own "Thin Lizzy - Greatest Hits". My version was 4 hours 30 minutes. If you are new to Thin Lizzy, this album may help you find times in Thin Lizzy history in which you may want to buy the full studio albums.
Free Music Review: An appetizer or an introduction to Thin Lizzy Hit: 4 Stars
I would say that this compilation is a teaser or an appetizer. With many bands and artists there will be enough with a "best of" album but that's not the case with the great Thin Lizzy - the world's most underrated rock band. Most of the hits are included like "The boys are back in town", "Waiting for an alibi", and "Don't believe a word". One cd is way too little or short to really capture the greatness of Thin Lizzy, and the fact that "Dedication" have the ambition to cover the band's whole career makes it obvious that some songs shouldn't be included, and many more are sadly excluded due to time space. The main reason to get "Dedication" is for that particular song (previously unreleased) and for those who really like Thin Lizzy there's no other way than getting all their work from 1975 to 1983.In my opinion the early years (1971-1974) were categorized by a lack of musical direction, and it wasn't until the release of "Fighting" in 1975, Thin Lizzy found their classic sound. Before that, the band had obvious problems finding their identity and even `tho I know that some people love the early Thin Lizzy you should be aware that it sounds almost like a different band.
Free Music Review: The Luck Of The Irish! Hit: 4 Stars
Thin Lizzy was THE Irish band of '70s/'80s;and they had more hits then just "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are BAck In Town".Starting with a rocked up Irish ballad "Whiskey in A Jar",this album takes no prisoners until the last cut;a song made from a demo called "Dedication".Phil Lynott was a poet, gypsy, and a killer bassist. The tracks culled from "Live And Dangerous" prove this. However,Phil also had soul;as proven on tracks such as "Dancing In The Moonlight" and "Sarah".This greatest hits collection proves where U2 got it's inspiration .The late Phil Lynott is missed by many all over the world. To say Thin Lizzy only had two hits is ridiculous. The guitar crunch, the blarney tinged voice;classic rock all round.
Free Music Review: Not the Very Best of Thin Lizzy Hit: 4 Stars
As with all "Best Of" compilations, they usually aint. There are some real gems here, "Cowboy Song" and "The Rocker"(a song I don't think I have ever heard on any radio station, college or otherwise), but there are a whole lot of great Lizzy songs left out. The sound on this disc is great, 5 stars, the content is closer to 3 stars. Still very much worth owning if you don't have all the studio discs. Maybe it should be called "Dedication: A Thin Lizzy Primer". Phil and the boyz were way ahead of their time and rocked thru some high times and low times in the rock music biz. Buy it for Phil because he was the ROCKER.
