Free Music Review: Definitive Thin Lizzy live, from one who was there
Hit: 5 Stars

Live at the Tower
Now HERE is the definitive live Thin Lizzy collection-- it is infinitely to be preferred to Live And Dangerous as this one, at least, is taken from the actual concert. I was actually there at the Tower for the Thursday night show, this very recording (that may even be MY south-Jersey 'piney yell' at the end of 'Jailbreak'!).

The Thin had used the late-'70s three-member incarnation of Savoy Brown as an opener, a band showing their wear and tear by this period-- sadly a fate soon to be realized by the Thin as well. But these ten songs, only a smattering of a selection that included 'Warriors', 'Emerald', 'Suicide', 'Rosalie', 'Johnny The Fox' and others, show Phil and the best of his boys at their very, very best.

In concert they often ran songs right together-- this recording is actually of five 'couplets' making the individual CD tracks a little irrelevant to separate on an iPod shuffle. The opener, the new 'Soldier of Fortune', begins with a gong in G, an idea taken from 'Tie Your Mother Down' by Queen for whom Thin had opened the season before (and which had been pictured on the cover of Live And Dangerous). As 'Soldier' ends on E-minor-- the opening chord of 'Jailbreak'-- they go straight into it with no interruption. The audience's increase in volume shows they all immediately know this one.

The pairing of 'Dancin' In The Moonlight' and 'Massacre' seems odd thematically, but, again, the keys are matched and musically it seems seamless. Then comes their trademark 'Cowboy Song' going into 'Boys Are Back', which the audience expected. As a cover band in Surf City we used to play each of these, not both together, and had learned 'Boys Are Back' in G, so we could not figure out how Thin would have put them together. The secret lies in Thin's being (then) an all-guitars band-- they had no need to tune anything to A-440 and tended to tune to each other for each song not needing to care about anything else. Thus on the Jailbreak LP, from which we learned it, 'Boys' appears to be in a slightly-too-high key of G and 'Cowboy' a more passable A. The fact is, they're both properly done in A.

The CD was intelligently produced by Thin guitarist Scott Gorham with bass, drums, and vocals in the center, Robertson's guitar on the right and Gorham's guitar on the left, so it's a joy to hear the sounds of the large and small Les Paul pickups both separately and together. What's surprising to me is how much Robertson showed off-- much of the fills and trills are his, and I had always thought it was Gorham doing the overplaying!

The close of 'Still Dangerous' is the crowd favorite 'Baby Drives Me Crazy', during which Phil always introduced the band, and then the musically dull 'Me And The Boys' which is used mainly as a curtain closer. These two are the weakest songs on the collection but definitely show what Thin live was made of.

If you have to have only ONE Thin Lizzy album, THIS is the one with their best done best. Cherish it-- for their like shall not be seen (nor heard) again.
