Free Music Notes for BlueFree Music Review: ** Extensive "Blue" Review** Part 1 Hit: 5 Stars
(Part 1 of a 2 part review)First of all, I'd like to say that I'm sorry there is a 1000 word limit on this review, because there is so much I can say about Third Eye Blind. They are a very deep and rich band, with lots of character in their lyrics and music. This album is a lot different than their first one, but it is possible to appreciate both. I bought their new album because I'd heard their first one and became an avid fan of third eye blind. Once I got a hold of their debut album, I listened to the whole thing over and over, there was such diversity and soul that I loved every song on the album. That said, their new album has a different soul. As others have stated before, this one is a lot more mature. It is also a lot more diverse, where the band tries out different styles of music and different beats. Instead of each song being guitar, bass, and drums, they use lots of different music effects, which is a good thing. However, one cannot appreciate any music until they can recognize it, meaning it has to be predictable at some point. That is why Blue has to grow on you. It is so spontaneous and energetic that you have to listen to it a few times to get in sync with the band. Each song has a unique flavor to it. "Anything", the first track, is a quick, punk-inspired song that will do great on the radio. It is fast paced and is reminiscent of their first album's style. Definitely a great song. The next song, possibly my favorite on the album, is titled "Walking with the Wounded". It is very deep, and the lyrics have an actual meaning as well (like many other songs by 3eb as well). It goes from slow to fast-paced, as the story in the lyrics progresses. Brilliantly done. It just sounds so right, that you want to listen to it over and over (which you will find yourself doing). The next song, "10 Days Late", really rocks. It's another fast-paced, hard hitting song that has great single potential. The great thing about 3eb songs is how they flow. "Never let you go" is the fourth song on the album. This has a great driving force behind it. The chorus is eerily addicting and the end has a fresh sound as well. "Deep inside of you" is one of the slower songs on the album. The slow songs are where you get the real messages that make you think. 3eb's lyrics are brilliant, and it is easy to see in a ballad such as this one. The chorus at the end is amazing, and you'll find yourself singing to it the first time you hear it. "An Ode to maybe", musically, is another hit. The lyrics are fluffy, and basically tell the story of a guy's trip to the laundromat (note: i have not read the lyrics to any of the songs on paper, but have listened to the album so many times that I basically have them memorized, so there may be some parts that I'm missing). That said, this song is another gem because of the singer's voice. "1000 Julys" is the type of song that would sound great live. It is hard-hitting, and it sounds very much like their debut album. "Red Summer Sun" takes a while to get used to. At first Jenkin's high pitched wailing (reminiscent of AC/DC) is a bit distracting, because it is such a change from the norm. But the more you hear it, much like the album as a whole, the more you appreciate it. It just shows his diversity as a singer, the end of the song, and the entirety of the hidden track, is very peaceful and relaxing, and that style should definitely be looked into by third eye blind on their independent album. "Camouflage" is one of my favorite songs on the album. I'm not sure why, but the way it sounds is just perfect. Granted, you can't understand what the singer is saying most of the time, but that's the point of the song. It's a whirlwind of lyrics and instruments that sounds beautiful. "Farther" is a song with a lot of electronic influence. The guitar is delightfully choppy throughout, and the voice effects are second to none. Part 2 of my review should be right below this one... if not good luck finding it!
