Free Music Review: How cult is created...
Hit: 5 Stars

What can one say about this record that hasn't already been said? Yes, it's underrated. Yes, it's perfect. More importantly, it is an extremely relevant item of its decade, one that clearly shows how people can still fight back media and "intelectual critic" when something honestly and trully commercial can be put out and still be good and liked by them. That's how cult is created.

Musically, it is simply a masterpiece, and every single praise you read in this web page is so true. From the famous and overplayed (but never too overplayed) first six, to the hard rocker intermissions up to the -very famous too- three jewels at the end, the album never hits a low note and actually, as some too have mentioned, has the bonus of telling a story, semi-connected, depends on wheater you want it to be or not, between each of the songs. The first time you pop it in, you will experience one of the best openers of all times. "Losing a whole year" enters with strength, rawness, screaming and stadium-live energy that simply introduces you to what you'll be hearing the next hour or so. "Narcolepsy" is the first hint to the unique lyrical style of Stephan Jenkins: raw, bold and really mean, yet graphic, poetic and seductive. I don't know what this guy eats for lunch but he's got a peculiar lens to this life alright. You can spot some The Cure influence in the fact of contradiction between melody-rythm and lyrics, it's just that Jenkins takes it to a different level -the jolly and mellow singing of: 'how'd you like to be alone and drowning, how'd you like to be alone and drowning' is almost funny-. The two cheap, stupid but supremely well written happy tunes on the record, "Semi-charmed life" and "Graduate" are probably the most known ones, and the most overplayed. They're also a lesson from Jenkins to the world about How To Write Absolutely Perfect Pop Songs, capable of competing with any other lesson of that type given by Cobain or Chris Martin. "Jumper" could be the best track on the album, and it's definitely out there in Jenkins's top 5 ever, and continues with the rude-speaking line of this pop genius, talking a friend out of jumping off a ledge on the top of a building (the title 'jumper' is rude enough), and it si simply magical how much SJ can comunicate with such simple words like 'I wish you would step out from that ledge my friend' combined with the right melody and rythm. The 'really famous singles' first half of the album ends with the sad but true "How's it gonna be", which is basically a list of fears that everyone has in a relationship, and the fact that eventhough you know it will end badly and with a crash, you still want to go ahead with it. Beautiful.

On we go to the second half, that kicks off with "Thanks a Lot", more of a rock tune that gives the sensation the mood has changed. "Good for you" and "Burning Man" which -thanks to a nice production trick- seem like tween tunes continue with the high momentum, and most importantly, present another face of Jenkins's singing habilities. "London" is one of 3eb's most unique songs, puting out a style that almost for sure will never be repeated by these guys, a lot of tension in the rythm and pretty risked in the poppy-driven melody combined with the hardest rocking guitars heard troughout the whole album. "I want you" brings the mood down and prepares for the closing three. It is probably the most nasty-commercial track, one of the most meaningless... yet I wish Britney's songs were half as good: 'send me all your vampires'. Finally, the trio kicks off with "The Background", a song about the frustration of losing -or partially losing- someone and still not being able to let go or to picture any kind of life that excludes him-her. Terribly sad, gives space to another one considered by many to be 'the masterpiece'... "Motorcycle drive by", a song that any words about it fall short to listening to it, and that contains one of the best Jenkins lines of all times -' I've never been so alone and I've never been so alive' - Finally, "God of wine" closses smoothly, perfectly, and with one of the best climaxes in a song I've ever heard. Also, look out for the cannot-get-out-of-your-mind riff in the intro -as if we didn't already had enought to digest with the album-.

Lyrically, the album is almost an encyclopedia of relationships, which by its own already makes it worth it. I can say that I like the music a little bit more on the second album, and the production a lot more on the third, put still and to put it out simple: there is nothing like the debut (this one). Like most things underrated, one tends to personally overrate it, I don't know, it could be, but so many people writing gold about this can't be wrong.

Free Music Review: The Greatest Album Of Our Time
Hit: 5 Stars

I know that may seem a bit much, since today you hear some people say "oh my god this is like the greatest cd ever" and most likely 3 months later they are saying the same thing about yet a different album. So let me start from the beginning.

This was in fact the first cd I ever purchased, I heard "Semi - Charmed Life" and had to get it, they instantly became my favorite band, and now 7 years later here I am 16 and still listening to it, I could never get sick of it, and every time I hear a certain song it brings back memories. From the opening "Loseing a whole year" to the final 4 songs which in my opinion made this cd a masterpiece, "I want you" which is a beautiful song I think the title speaks for itself, "The background" very sad, yet beautiful, brings me to tears whenever I hear it, Motorcycle drive-by which is my all time favorite song, and ending with "God of Wine" which can only be described as amazing, and a perfect ending to this already perfect album.

1.Losing a whole year.4/5 Good opening, makes me smile whenever I hear it.

2.Narcolepsy.4/5 Starts slow then gets a bit heavier.

3.Semi-Charmed Life.3/5 First Single I believe. A bit overplayed butstill a good song.

4.Jumper.4/5 Another single, once again overplayed but still very good.

5.Graduate.4/5 A harder song with attutude, you will find yourself singing along every time.

6.How's It Going To Be.5/5 A beautiful song, I never realized how much I loved this song untill I hear it in the opening of an episode of "Cold Case" on CBS, it gave me chills and I had to hear it again and again anad again.

7.Thanks A Lot.5/5 Exellent! Another Song which will never get old. Awesome Guitars in this one.

8. Burning Man.3/5 Takes A few Listens, my least favorite song on the album. Still a really good song.

9. Good For You.4.5/5 Good Song, Good Guitars, Amazing Lyrics.

10. London. 3/5 Another Harder song, almost punk.

11. I Want you. 5/5 Beautiful

12. The Background 5/5 Such a sad song, an amazing chorus, and beautiful lyrics.

13. Motorcycle drive-by 5/5 I only wish I could rate this song Higher, My all time favorite song for about 5 years now, not many people can say that. I almost Die everytime I hear it, "I've never been so alone, and I've....never been so alive.

14. God Of Wine 5/5 A masterpeice, this song gives me chills, even after Ive heard it thousands of times (litterally).

Im a tough critic, i rated a few songs 3/5, because that is their true rating, some amazong rewiewers will rate every song 5/5, rate the worst song 4/5, and give the best song on the cd something absolutely ubsurd like "100/5" or 1000000000/5" I mean talk about exageration. 5/5 is a perfect rating, and thats what I give this cd, I'm not exagerating, nor am I lying when I say that I will still be listening to this album when I'm in my 80s and 90s. Stephan Jenkins Created a masterpeice, "Blue" was a good album, and "Out of the Vein" came close to this album, but this is a masterpiece and Ive only said that about 3 other cds in my 200+ collection of rock cds, those cds being "No Name Face" by Lifehouse and "Once" by Nightwish and "Aenima" by Tool, so in conclusion, I can only say that if you dont own this album, buy it!! If you own this album and dont think too highly of it, please go and listen to it the whole way through, dont skip a track, and by the time you are done im positive that you will have a different opinion. Third Eye Blind has to be the most underapriciated band of our time, so all you 1 - 4 star rewiweres who listened to this album once then brought it to the pawn shop I want you to know you disgust me and I beg of you to go back and see what this album really is! 4.5 / 5 stars? Thats down to the level of the Backstreet boys according to amazons ratings, how pathetic and sad! 5/5 Stars

Free Music Review: Pouring Salt into the Wounds of Hearbreak
Hit: 5 Stars

Nope, "SemiCharmed Life" is not the best song on this CD, not by a longshot. In fact, I made a personal copy of this CD and eliminated that track from the lineup.

I remember when this band broke on the radio, back in high school. I remember going to a 3eb (Third eye blind) concert as a freshman in college. But I never gave a darn about 3eb until a few months ago, when I came across the full album. I was looking for new music, and I enjoyed 3eb's radio songs, so I figured the album would be a safe bet.

My life would never be the same.

Yes, that is a major statement to make. If you read my other reviews, you'll see that I rely on music in times of severe stress in my life. When I got this 3eb CD, I was going through a terrible loss--the loss of my first true love. She turned out to be a horrible person, a completely selfish liar. I had built an image of her in my mind, that she was the most loving, caring girl in the whole world, and that I was going to marry her. I was completely wrong. But, she was amazingly hot (the central downfall of any man...).

I had split up with her probably a year ago, but she and I started being friends again, after she got engaged to some other guy. Yup, I was right--there was an amazing, volatile chemistry between us. It never faltered. We were perfect for each other, except for the glaring hole that she was incapable of returning the type of devotion that I felt for her. It's that kind of relationship where all your friends are happy it's over, because they can plainly see how it's destroying you, how there's no hope she'll ever become a loving, caring, trustworthy person.

She broke off the engagement one month before she was going to marry the guy. She wanted to start something with me again... Saying no to her was the hardest thing I ever did, especially since she was now moving literally all the way across the country; she and I would never see each other again. But, like she had cheated on me, she had been cheating on her fiancee, first with me, then with someone else. At 26 years old, this was her character, not a phase. Once more, this gorgeous girl had broken my heart.

That's where 3eb comes in. I distinctly remember cranking "The Background" in my car after I saw her for the last time. When I reached my apartment, I stumbled out of the car, collapsing in a heap of tears and gasps. She was gone. But like the song states, I'll always carry her in the background of my mind. The plans I make still have her in them. She may fade to a mere buzz in my mind over the years, but as soon as she comes swimming into view, I know my heart will explode in passion for her, no matter if I'm in love with someone else at the time. I'll hang on her words, like I always used to do. Words that others use so lightly (i.e. "I love you"), I only feel for her. Like the first verse, I do the things she and I did before: after she moved away, I spent an evening strolling the apartment building where we had our first kiss. I had tears in my eyes the whole time, with that piercing solo screaming in my head. Obviously, I felt her long after we were through; no one before or after her has even come close.

Unlike other albums, this CD will pour salt into your wounds. Keep that in mind when listening to it--and I hope you're strong enough to handle it.

Free Music Review: First CD I Ever Bought, Best CD I Ever Bought
Hit: 5 Stars

I am not ashamed to say that I like(d?) these guys. Two consecutive great albums and now, eh, notsomuch.
They popped onto the scene with the poppy "Semi-Charmed Life." I'm not so much a big fan of "Jumper" (maybe because that was the only song that I listened to for about a month), but its still a good song. I can remember the track listing in my head,

I've heard this CD so many times. I bought it 7 years ago, and I still listen to it at least once a month, if not week.

1. Losing A Whole Year-- Excellent song about losing. Great lyrics. Powerful rocker to open the disc. 5/5

2. Narcolepsy-- This song is just pure fun. It slows then speeds then slows then goes even faster (if you listen during the "how'd you like to be alone and drowning" lines, it does get faster). My personal favorite. 6/5

3. Semi-Charmed Life-- No explanation. Everyone's heard it. Its the "doo-doo-doo" song. 4/5

4. Jumper-- Good message, good lyrics, true to life. Played too much. 3/5

5. Graduate-- Another great rocker with lyrics going along with the general "Where the hell am I going?" theme. Remix is available on the Can't Hardly Wait soundtrack. 4.5/5

6. How's It Gonna Be-- This song used to make me cry. Now I play it on my guitar and make other people cry. 5/5

7. Thanks A Lot- Slower song to follow HIGB, but still mid-tempo to keep your head bobbing. 4/5

8. Burning Man-- Good song. I like it. Can't think of much else to say. Its better live. 3/5

9. Good For You-- Oooh, Steve was angry. Slow rocker. Love it. 5/5

10. London-- Rocker. Good friggin song. Steve shouts a lot. And I love him for it. I just love his voice, its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Also on the American Werewolf In Paris soundtrack, if I'm not mistaken. 4.5/5

11. I Want You-- Acoustic song, experimental. So so good. Best lyrics on the CD, i think. Poetry set to music. Its a beautiful track that reflects of hippies with incense. Its a sexy song.

12. Background- First song in the infamous "Trio," the three slow songs that finish out the CD. He misses her. It shows. Its beautiful.

13. Motorcycle Drive-By-- Narc was my personal favorite, but this is hands-down the best song on the disc. The way it goes from acoustic to just a powerful punch in the face. He misses her. It shows. Its beautiful.

14. God of Wine-- He needs help. She wont help. He misses her. It shows. Its beautiful. Good way to close out the CD. Epic song. I forget to breathe every time I hear it. Which is at least once a month, if not week.

If you can find the European version of this album (I think that's it), try to pick it up. Its got a song called Tattoo Of The Sun that is should have been put on the US version because its just amazing. Pick up the Varsity Blues soundtrack for a song called "Horror Show," the American Pie soundtrack for "New Girl," the A Knight's Tale soundtrack for "Eye Conqueror," and the Clash tribute compilation for their version of "Train In Vain" which is amazing, too.

Free Music Review: Above even the highest expectations
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought the "A Lot Like Love" soundtrack and was hooked on "Semi-Charmed Life," but listening to this album for the first time blew me away. I listened to it all day for, like, three days straight. Words fail me to describe this album. However, I will try my best.

1-Losing a Whole Year(3/5): No melody except in the chorus. Oddly, it works for this song.

2-Narcolepsy(4/5): There's almost two songs in this one: It starts out quite slow and mellow, but picks up by a minute-thirty in.

3-Semi-Charmed Life(4.5/5): Everyone's heard this one. Peppy, happy, the ultimate sunny day or energizing morning song.

4-Jumper(5/5): Amazing song. Good guitar groove, and almost everyone's been through someting like this song.

5-Graduate(1/5): To be honest, I haven't actually listened to this all the way through. I always skip it within the first thirty-seconds. Absolutely the worst song on the whole CD.

6-How's It Going To Be(3/5): A good good-bye song. Perfect for any graduation or break-up.

7-Thanks Alot(3/5): Harder, edgier, not one of my favorites, but it has its place.

8-Burning Man(3/5): Sounds alot like Thanks Alot. Also not one of my favorites.

9-Good For You(4/5): It's kind of an angry song, but I quite like it. Again, harder and edgier.

10-London(3.5/5): There's nothing wrong with this one but it sounds too much like the last few.

11-I Want You(3.5/5): Kind of a psychadellic take on 3eb. You have to be in just the right mood for this one.

12-The Background(4/5): Kind of strikes me as a pointless song, but I listen to it every time. It is very good, though.

13-Motercycle Drive By(5/5): The lyrics at the very first are kind of stupid, but this song is AMAZING, and the lyrics get better with time. The imagery it brings is amazing, and everyone's "never felt so alone, but I've never felt so alive." One of my favorite songs I've ever heard. It starts out with a very mellow acoustic guitar, picks up, picks up more, and reverts to the acoustic. Almost worth the purchase of the whole CD just for this song. The "layers" in this song are mind-blowing.

14-God of Wine(5/5): This songs deserves more than five stars. Slower than "Motercycle Drive By," this song is an amazing song for thoughtful days when nothing seems to make sense, but is great everyday. I can't get enough of it. Even though it's probably the slowest song on the whole album, it never gets old. Again, almost worth buying the whole thing just for this one. I can't say enough about it. I love, love, LOVE this song. The artistry on this is so profound. I honestly could go on like this all day.

So, all in all, even the worst tracks (excluding "Graduate") are much better than most bands' best tracks. Worth every single smegging cent you spend for it, and then some.
