Free Music Notes for Third Eye BlindFree Music Review: The Most Underrated release of the 90's Hit: 5 Stars
I've had this cd for nearly a decade now and it STILL gets regular play. I'm 22 and I first listened to it in late junior high. Suffice to say, now that I'm older I can appreciate it on a whole other level. This album, to me, is PERFECT from start to finish. The songs are so excellent and speak volumes in themselves.
It starts off with "Losing a Whole Year", the nostalgic in your face anthem for unrequited lovers everywhere, then effortlessly blends into "Narcolepsy", a song that pretty much anyone and everyone can relate to. Feeling bored with the everyday, the mundane. Throwing yourself out there, vying for connection among a sea of people who really just end up being fake and superficial. Then comes the song that everyone knows, the infamous "Doo do do Doo do do do..Doo do do" Semi Charmed Life, which really needs little explanation as the lyrics speak for themselves. Just a great summer anthem for cars to blare everywhere all around. This cd is packed with great radio singles, but it seems like people hear those and then dismiss the rest. Really there is so much more going on than what the radio singles would lead you to believe. Stephan Jenkins wrote the majority of this album, and man did he do it well. He's got a knack for the ambiguous, for making lyrics into almost tangible poetry, for creating great visuals and really hard hitting heart stingers.
"Thanks A lot" - A driving, somewhat melancholy but haunting song... reminiscing a relationship that was doomed to end, but knowing the effects you had/have on this person "I'm the fear in your eyes / I'm the fire in your flies / I'm the sound thats buzzing round your head"
"The Background" - Really beautiful song that's impossible not to love and play constantly (if anything, it comes in handy if you're the masochistic type and like torturing yourself..) "cuz I felt you long after we were through... / I live in the numbness now, In the background"
"Motorcycle Driveby" - The songwriting is so flawless, the words are sung with the kind of emotion that almost makes you feel invasive for listening to it. His account of a relationship gone awry, coming to the realization that things will never be the same, feeling foolish for not knowing sooner. "I've never been so alone / and I've never been so alive" is the constant resonating line throughout the song.
"God of Wine" - The closer, again great lyrics by and sung with really moving conviction... def. a fan favorite. The guitars are throbbing and it's got a great climax.
All in all, this cd is a MUST HAVE for anyone who liked the singles, & really for anyone in general who can appreciate honest, raw alternative rock. Certainly the best release that year, and will remain in my top 5 probably forever.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
I have over 200 CD's in my collection and without a doubt this Third Eye Blind's debut album is my favorite. From start to finish this does not let up. Here's a breakdown song by song:Losing a Whole Year: A great way to start off the album. Anger, angst, and pent up frustration are the theme of this song. You may or may not remember this from the radio. Narcolepsy: The best song on the first half of the album. Starts out slow then speeds up quickly. One of my favorite 3EB songs! Semi-Charmed Life: If you haven't heard this song then I don't know what to say. This was their breakout hit, yet it is the worst song on the album, in my opinion. It is still a great song a fun to sing along with once you learn all the words. If you don't like this song DON'T let it deter you from buying the album. Jumper: Another well known song. Powerful lyrics and an interesting melody. Graduate: Makes you want to jump around and scream when you here this song. This was a moderate hit on the radio, you might recognize it. How's It Going to Be: Another familiar tune. Great song, yet it is the worst ballad on this album. Thanks a lot: This song takes the longest to get into but once it hits you you will never turn back. Burning Man: I can't even count the number of times I've had this song stuck in my head. It has a chorus which is catchy as hell. Good For You: Powerful raging song, love the end when Stephen is screaming the chorus, awesome. London: A song that makes you want to pump your fists into the air and jump around. THESE NEXT FOUR SONGS ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS: I Want You: This song is dynamite. It is a nice mellow ballad with interesting lyrics. Another fun song to sing along to once you know all the words. Very catchy. The Background: The most emotional song on the album. A very sad song. I hardly ever cry when I hear music but this song has produced lumps in my throat several times. The emotion from Stephan on this song is amazing. Motorcycle Drive By: Here it is. This is the 3EB fan favorite from this album. This song is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING both lyrically and musically. Everytime I hear it I can't get over how good it is. God of Wine: Can't imagine a better way to end the album. The last few chords of this song always sends chills up my spine because the transition of this album from beginning to end is just stunning. This album proved that 3EB is more than just a few radio hits. Their best songs on this album are the ones that never were released as singles, making this just a stellar collection of songs. The other two albums by 3EB are also highly recommended, although they sound nothing like this album. That's why I love this band, they keep their sound new and fresh. BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!!!
Free Music Review: THE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE!!! Hit: 5 Stars
READ THIS REVIEW!!!
Let me start by saying what I hate about Third Eye Blind, They ruined music for me. After listening to this album I cant listen to anything else because NOTHING COMES EVEN CLOSE!!!
I buy a lot of products off of Amazon but rarely write a review. So when I take the time to write one the product must have been either HORRIBLE or LIGHTS OUT FANTASTIC. This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I can honestly say that I feel this is the best album ever made. Go search on Amazon for any album that you thought was awesome. You will see a bunch of good reviews I am sure, BUT you will not see reviews like these. Look at how many people say this is the best album ever made or the best band ever. You wont find that with any other album and there is a reason why. It has been 9 years since I got this album and I still play it like I just bought it 9 minutes ago.
I loved Semi Charmed Life since the first time I heard it, It is my favorite song. About 9 years ago my friend bought me this album as a christmas present... It has been spinning in my player ever since. I was EXTREMELY SUPRISED TO FIND OUT HOW GOOD THIS BAND REALLY IS. While Semi Charmed Life is my favorite song it is not even their best song.
I am a big fan of music, I listen to everything from Hip Hop to Rock. What makes 3eb soo different is their unique style of AMAZING LYRICS and Fantastic Instrumentals. Stephen jenkins has a stunning way of putting lines together with deep meaning ("I've never been soo alone, And I've never been soo alive","How'd you like to be alone and drowning", "I woke you up and I Slit the throat of your confidence") And his delivery is flawless, He puts such emotion into every word and has a way to make you feel it like in "God of Wine". These songs take you on an emotional Roller Coaster of ups and downs.
The other day I was attempting to introduce one of my friend to the band and he said "Put on their best song". I stopped and thought... They are all their best song. This is an album that you can put on and listen to from Beginning to end WITH NO SKIPPING!!! And it stands the test of time considering that it has been out for 10 years and people still write reviews giving it praise.
Everyone should have this CD in their collection. I will not waste time reviewing every song because they would all get 5/5 or 4.5/5. What I will suggest though is that if you have this album you should download "Tatoo of the Sun" It is a great song but was not on the US version of the album.
I hope I did this album justice in this review. My suggestion is get some really good speakers or headphones and zone out to this album.
IT IS A LYRICAL MASTERPIECE!!!
Free Music Review: Groundbreaking debut Hit: 5 Stars
Third Eye Blind's self-titled 1997 debut is one of my favorite 90s rock albums. This album is one of the finest from the post-grunge period, and put into motion the group that would win over thousands with their well-produced, inspired rock. "Third Eye Blind" is full of very well-written, catchy pop-rock songs, but it's far more artistic than your average mainstream rock. Stephan Jenkins' lyrics are passionate and emotional, expressing despair and depression over failed relationships and problems of life. His vocal delivery ranges from a soft singing to an almost rapped fast pace, and his signature shrieky falsetto is always welcome. The album as a tone has a fairly dark and depressed mood to it, but the upbeat songs emit a much more joyful air. Behind Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar's musicianship, the songs are built around catchy guitar riffs that match the vocals perfectly. The songs are extremely catchy and memorable, and the emotion in these songs makes them inspiring and appealing.
The tracklist begins with the fast and sad "Losing a Whole Year," about a lost love. The furious guitars are loud and thumping, but Jenkins' vocals and lyrics are soft. "Narcolepsy" is a nice, almost relaxing tune until the end. The #1 single, the unforgettable "Semi-Charmed Life," is without a doubt one of the very best songs of the 90s, a perfectly constructed pop tune. The memorable hook and almost rapped verses, to the bridge and guitar break, this song is a catchy, timeless classic. Just as good is its perfect follower, "Jumper." The spinning, almost acoustic feeling song is an inspiring conversation to a suicidal friend, and the hook and verses are enough to make anyone sing along. "Graduate" is a pounding, heavy song that I like. The slower "How's It Going to Be" was another successful single, a well-written tune. "Thanks a Lot" and "Burning Man" are both very well-produced, they're upbeat and catchy rock songs with meaningful lyrics. "Good for You" and "London" are also enjoyable, exhibiting raw emotion. "I Want You" is one of my favorites, musically laidback and lyrically yearning. The album closes with three slow yet very fulfilling songs, "The Background," "Motorcycle Drive By," and "God of Wine."
"Third Eye Blind" is one of the finest rock albums of the nineties, and it has something that will appeal to everybody. From the catchy, well-written pop tunes, to the emotional lyrics or the musical artistry, there's a lot to love about this debut. I also highly recommend its follow up, 1999's Blue.
Free Music Review: nostalgic mid '90s Hit: 5 Stars
Im writing reviews in search of broadening my musical horizons so to speak. its time to ditch the blink and killswitch and move on to the wide world of music. I grew up in Washington so i do love the alternative music. I hope i don't end up in the same category either.
Middle school is a weird time. time of chemical imbalance and social awkwardness. Recess is taken away and kids are left looking around. It can be a big time of unacceptance and heartbreak, such was my case. I was very shy and distant and had very little courage. Instead of toughening up i listened to third eye blind's debut album. The wounded lyrics and ear friendly riffs really took a hold of me, it was magic to me. Looking back on it now i laugh at it a lot. It is funny how a little studio magic, chord progressions, and lots of rehearsals of 'soulfoul' singing can do to a album. It is very plain to me that this a corporate band, changing their original style of music to sell records. you can disagree with me sure but the truth is, the music is so souped up that the band completely redid themselves on 'Blue'. I dont hate the band. i still enjoy their music, more for nostalgia than anything else. not a lot of bands can make me cry. Very talented was the main songwriter Kevin Cadogen and very heartfelt was the lead singer Stephen Jenkins. Dont expect any skillfull guitar playing. the guitars are an effect to contribute to the vocals. the drums are very studio oriented as well. almost everything adds up to the singing. jenkins voice is amazingly tortured, not too low or high it is just the right amount to hit the nerves. from the opening track "Losing a whole Year", the emotion really hits hard, to the ending of "God of Wine". whether it be soft or loud songs they always have a very emotional bridge and heartwrenching chorus. the big single "Semi-Charmed life" is kind of out there on the album. i will confess this album has pop elements but the single is the only real pop rock song. the whole CD is a high point, very consistent. The very brooding and depressing "Background" to the nerve destroying sadness of "jumper". Overall it still amazes me how this band manages to get me. and it is not completely because of studio magic. they are truly talented musicians and i hope they always keep innovating themselves.
