Free Music Review: A SOLID RELEASE FROM 3EB!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's been 6 long years since the last release Out Of the Vein.
A lot of anticipation and quite honestly I had some very high expectations given the amount of time 3EB had to assemble the latest offering and road test this material over the last several years.
Some of what has been released sounds similar to the live versions and others are an about face.

before I go further, do yourself a favor and don't bother to ever listen/rely on those 20-30 second previews on Amazon or any of the other websites that may offer them prior to release. They never do any of the songs justice.

It has now been over a month of immersing myself in "Ursa Major"
In my opinion (based on some of the other reviews I see here) I think some people will NEVER be satisfied with what 3EB releases again and expect "Jumper part 2" or "God of wine part 2". These guys set the bar so high on the self titled release in the 90's that for some they'll never meet those poeples expectations ever again. But you're only young once and it's hard to truly recapture the intensity of youth and the struggle to survive/live.
As you can see/read, hardcore 3Eb fans are very passionate about they're band and music they release.

So has it been the wait? Yes- it's great to hear the guys releasing new quality material after so long

Has it lived up to my expectations? Yes- that yes gets bigger and bolder with every listening.

Would I recommend you purchase this? Yes- There is something on here for everyone who enjoys 3EB.

Is this the best 3EB release? Well no...I would say it's on par with OOTV and a bit better in spots.

The songs on Ursa Major are classic 3eb - Brimming with some powerful, memorable, and melodic tunes. We definitely have some quality stuff on this release and anyone who feels otherwise isn't giving this release a fair shot.

You'll sense the typical influences throughout this release and it draws from all 3 of the previous releases.
Some similar song structures and snippets we've heard on previous releases pop up here and there.
We've got a nice acoustic flavored melodic vibe permeating throughout the album with enough hooks and catchy choruses to satisfy the most ardent 3EB fan.

"Can you take me" starts off the proceedings with this flat out 3EB rocker. For me this is pure driving music and I can't help but sing along and enjoy Tony playing. Great lead off track!

The lead single "Don't believe a word" is a bouncy song that is quite catchy and poppy. It has some great elements however, I question if this should have been the song to release as the first single?
"Bonfire" is a killer 3EB track that has some serious ties to The Police-it almost sounds like Gordon Sumner ala "Sting" is singing background vocals. It demands to be released as the second single from the album. It's yet another incredible track that I crave more and more each day.

The best of the rest?
"Sharp Knife" is classic unmistakable 3EB. I love this track and so far the album is a killer in my eyes. "Sharp Knife" is an awesome song in the 3EB cannon of music. It's as good as anything else they've done in my humble opinion.
"About to break" should have a long future of ahead of it for the live shows.
It will surely be one of those songs that the audience sings along to live during the choruses and know all the lyrics for.
"Summertown" is another highlight of Ursa and has changed through the months and years when it was first performed in a live setting. Some may enjoy the changes and other may not.
Bottom line: This is a great song and will demand repeated playing at higher volumes.

"Water Landing" is another gem that sinks in to your subconscious and has it choruses and riff popping up in your head throughout the course of your work day.

Both the tracks of "Dao of St. Paul" and "Monotov's Private Opera" show the lower key, softer side of 3EB with great results. Your ears will demand repeated listening.

I feel Stephen Jenkins has put down some of his best vocals on this release.
I'm also very impressed with the job Tony Fredianelli does, who plays FOR the songs and embellishes them with some beautiful sonic tone, textures, light, and shade throughout. He doesn't get enough credit as a virtuoso and songwriter.

The bad? Well it's not so bad....Although I can enjoy the acoustic elements and structures of "One In Ten" or "Why can't you be", these tracks tend to bring down the albums intensity level a bit too much.
Maybe they sound like Stephen Jenkins solo material or something? Hmmm But the placement of the tracks could have been better.
Lastly I'm not sure why 3EB chose to use that snippet of "Carnival Barker" at the end? The full length version is lurking on the internet and should have just been included in its entirety. Not sure why 3EB threw it at the end in its cut form? Maybe this will somehow tie into Ursa Minor"? Hmmm Anyway, It's a small hiccup in the grand scheme of things.

I still feel despite what some so called id!ot critics have said along the way, that 3EB is one of the best bands to come out of the 90's. History will end up being very kind and will prove me/us right.

In the 60's and 70's so many great bands used to release quality album EVERY year
Let's hope 3EB releases the much talked about partner to this album "Ursa Minor" and then doesn't take another 5-6 years to release another album.

Buy Ursa Major and see/hear what you're missing!!

* Update 12/4/09 * Have been listening to this album constantly since it's release. I can already tell you this is one release that has legs. You'll continue to enjoy it 10-15 years from now. A consistant and solid release that pleases me and meets my lofty expectations for all things 3EB.

Ursa Major Poster

Third Eye Blind blasted out of San Francisco when "Semi-Charmed Life" went to # 1 at Modern Rock and their self-titled album sold 5 million copies worldwide. This debut album contained several other chart-topping singles such as Jumper, How s It Going To Be, Graduate and others cementing the band's place in music history. The unique combination of brutal and controversial lyrics mixed with infectious melodies made an indelible connection with fans it s a phenomenon that defines Third Eye Blind and has made them the most requested band on college campuses. The band s song Jumper was recently used in Jim Carrey s movie Yes Man and regularly sells over 5,000 singles a week, 10 years after its release.

Third Eye Blind is an unprecedented story of a band coming into focus with the help of an entirely new youth culture and causing an underground sensation it s a fan relationship that had driven the band and Ursa Major, their first album in six years. In a sense, Third Eye Blind s fans are so inextricably linked that they re considered another member of the band.

From 2007 2009, the band performed before a remarkable 1 million people, marking them the most-requested artist at colleges nationwide. Pure and authentic, a canon of songs with no media coverage or radio play have compelled a new generation of followers by organic word of mouth alone. Fans attached themselves to songs like Slow Motion and Motorcycle Drive By, the former of which was censored by their record company but began appearing on file-sharing sites with full lyrics, and is now hailed as a masterpiece being covered by countless other bands.

Emotional, reflective, aggressive, and sometimes outwardly political, Ursa Major features some of the most intense music of Third Eye Blind s career.
