I, like most people I'm sure, bought this CD primarily because I am a huge fan of Russell Crowe's...but I can honestly say I am also a huge fan of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts as well! This album has an interesting mixture of songs that I feel really showcase what they're all about. Like Crowe as an actor, the band refuses to let itself be typecast into any particular category, which I feel works for them. The songs on this disc range from gentle ballads to feel-good pop, to hard rocking numbers. Most interesting, I feel, is Russell's talents as a writer, as he either wrote or cowrote every song on this CD. The lyrics say alot about him, as there is a personal story behind each one. In "Memorial Day" he writes about his grandfather's involvement in WW II with truth and respect.(As most Russell fans know, he wore one of his grandfather's medals to the Academy Awards ceremony this year, when he won for Best Actor.) "The Night That Davey Hit the Train" is about a movie co-star's death and conversations about suicide. "The Judas Cart" is about a personal family experience."The Legend of Barry Kable" is about a real person the band knew in Australia.It gives you a hint of the real man behind the movie star image. When I listen to this CD (which is nearly every day since I bought the Australian version six months ago!) I don't think of Russell Crowe, the "singing actor"...I feel he is quite good with the rest of the band as a singer and as a musician. The music stands on its own. Check this out! I think you'll be quite surprised, and hopefully, quite pleased.
