Free Music Review: Florida Fan Hit: 4 Stars
First of all, TOFOG is NOT a NEW band. It's changed a bit over the years, but it's not new. Russell Crowe (lead singer, guitar) and Dean Cochran (lead guitarist) have been writing music together since 1984. The band added Garth Adam (bass guitar) and David Kelley (drummer) later and have been a performing group around Australia since 1992. Dave Wilkins, guitar, and Stewart Kirwan, trumpet, also provide backup vocals and have been performing with the band for the past two to three years. The band didn't find the name, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, until 1995. They have released 4 CDs under this name through their official website [...]. I find the music of this latest CD to be a little tamer compared to their Gaslight release which contained more intros and live recordings. But I love most of the songs on Bastard Life or Clarity. My favorites are Hold You, Sail Those Same Oceans, Memorial Day, and Things Have Got to Change. One of the reasons that I like this CD, and the band's music in general, is that they are very versatile. Some songs sound folksy, some rock, and some country. Hold You is very sensual. The Legend of Barry Cable is kind of sad. I, too, saw them perform live in Austin, TX. I believe they are an awesome live band. Most of the audience knew the music. I, unfortunately, ended up at the back of the crowd, but was on a platform that lifted me up so I could see above everyone. The band was tight. The music great. I could hear the voices of the audience rising as they sang along with the band. As the band and the crowd melded together, it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. It was the best time I've ever had! Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts is a great band. You should give them a listen.
Free Music Review: BLOC - by TOFOG (a vastly under-rated Aussie band) Hit: 4 Stars
"Bastard Life or Clarity" is the new album by hot Aussie band TOFOG. A little known band and in my opinion vastly under-rated. TOFOG consists of 6 guys who blend well together into a tight musical group. Stewie Kirwan on the horn adds a distinctive flavour. Dean Cochran is the lead guitar maestro with some impressive guitar licks. He can certainly jam with the best of them. Dave Wilkins lends strong falsetto vocals with Dave Kelly demonstrating power and enthusiasm on the drums.Garth Adam has a solid sense of rhythmn on bass and Russell Crowe fronts on guitar and vocals. His other great strength is in his thought provoking lyrics.(He writes most of the lyrics himself with some input from his band mates.)The man is a born story-teller. I particularly liked Memorial Day which has great horn and guitar chords. Things Have Got To Change is another great track which makes you want to just get up and dance. Barry Kable, the slow version, is emotive and atmospheric and my favourite from the album. The slow version I think is particularly appropriate to the subject matter of the song. This album grows on you - give it a listen and you'll find youreslf slowly becoming immersed in this music. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: TOFOG 'S Songs from the Heart Hit: 4 Stars
I bought this CD after reading several reviews about Russell Crowe's band TOFOG and their US tour, mostly out of curosity. I was both amused and delighted by the songs on this CD. I was blown away by the lyrics written or co-written by Russell. They are so open and full of feeling. The band has a solid folk-rock groove. While this is not the most polished collection I've heard, I love the haunting melodies of songs like WENDY and SAIL THOSE SAME OCEANS and the hard driving beat of SWEPT AWAY BAYOU and SOMEBODY ELSE'S PRINCESS.a couple of places on the CD that the band members were having great fun recording this CD. I play this CD over and over and have cassettes for my walkman and car. I am happy to have this as part of my collection.
Free Music Review: That voice...what more can I say!! Hit: 4 Stars
Of course I bought this CD, not because I am a fan of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, but because I am a huge Russell Crowe fan. What I found was an enjoyable CD made moreso by the fact that Russell Crowe is singing. If his speaking voice sends shivers down your spine, then his singing voice will send you over the top. You can't help but visualize Russell in your mind, while he is singing, only adding to the experience. From the music standpoint, my favorites are "Sail Those Same Oceans", "Wendy", and "Judas Car". All have interesting and perhaps meaningful lyrics, but again I have to admit that it is Russell's voice that makes this CD a must have.
