Free Music Review: One of the best darkwave releases of all time

I honestly can't get enough of this CD. When I first heard This Ascension years ago, I thought they were very good, and indeed, they have been a staple of the gothic/darkwave scene for a long time. One of the pioneers of the sound today and featuring one of the leading women of the scene, This Ascension has taken their sound to a new level with this disc. There is not one song on this album that I don't like. A couple of my favorites are "Serpent's Serenade" which is dark and brooding, a classic goth rock song while "Forever Shaken" is melodic and lilting. This is what gothic music is all about. The entire album is honest and revealing without resorting to pathetic cliche lyrics and tired guitar riffs. Perhaps one of the best tracks is the incredibly beautiful "I Wish" in which Dru pours her heart out to the listener. The song almost brings me to tears with the raw emotion it invokes. These are true artists that have written a collection of amazing songs. The album is imaculately produced without that bubble gum overproduced pop sound. All in all, easily the best album of 1999 and one of the best gothic/darkwave CDs ever released.
