Free Music Review: A Good Try
Hit: 3 Stars

Thomas Dolby does his best to break out of the electronic niche he was in with this album, and on that front, he succeeds completely. The music is a bit more spotty. "Keys to Her Ferrari" is a pretty good hard swing number, "Airhead" is decent pop (despite the rather unnecessary politically-correct lyrical ending), and "Budapest By Blimp" is a very nice dreamy number. Give Mr. Dolby an E for effort for even attempting to cover George Clinton - the song, however, doesn't do well. "Pulp Culture" sounds very stilted to me, and if "it doesn't mean a thing/if you ain't got that/ability to swing", Mr. Dolby doesn't mean a thing. A decent collection all told.

Free Music Review: Yuech! Laura Creamer strikes again! Budapest by Blimp, anyone?

Free Music Review: Mediocre Attempt--not what he does best
Hit: 2 Stars

I'll agree with another reviewer who felt like Dolby was pandering to the market. The songs are produced slickly, it's energetic, the technical aspects are great, but it lacks feeling.

To my mind, this album was a huge waste of Dolby's immense talents. He seems out of touch with any kind of feeling except on a couple of songs. It doesn't bother me that he's not doing synthy New Wave. Many songs on The Flat Earth are jazzy. Astronauts and Heretics wasn't classic New Wave, either.

Budapest by Blimp is the only song on the album in which Dolby showcases his special brand of moody, lyrical pop. Yes, I know he's imitating other styles--but he can't seem to pull them off convincingly. I don't feel any sincerity coming from him, and it just feels like an elaborate joke.

I'd probably rate this album higher if it were anyone else besides Dolby since I wouldn't have such high expectations. In my opinion, this is his worst album by far. Budapest by Blimp is the only reason this album even gets two stars.

Maybe it's a matter of taste, but I didn't really want to hear cheap imitations of other people's styles. For example, many people do Salsa and Reggae much better than he does, so I don't need a tongue-in-cheek parody.

My advice is to skip this album and get one of his others. Get The Golden Age of Wireless if you're looking for a synthy New Wave sound, or get The Flat Earth if you want to hear some jazz-influenced songs. Even get Astronauts and Heretics over this album since it's more convincing--even if he seems a little past his prime in it.

Free Music Review: Definitely Not His Best
Hit: 2 Stars

I love Thomas Dolby. I consider him a genius. I have all of his albums. But this album, frankly, is a major disappointment. It is his worst. Although there are a couple of good songs on it, and although us die-hard fans will certainly want it, I cannot recommend it to anyone else. It seems as though, on this album, he was pandering to an audience that was unable to appreciate his earlier brilliant work, a bit of a musical sell-out.
