Free Music Review: Don't Be "Tiftless" - this CD is Awesome !!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I slid "Another Country" into the CD and hit play. I planned to select one of the 2 songs I had already heard on the radio, but stopped because the first song caught me, the second song was one that I knew and liked- the next thing I knew the cd was over and I had to hear it all again !!! The lyrics are prolific and the music incredible ! Mix Tift's angelic sounding vocals, Jay Brown's harmonies, Zeke Hutchins' clocklike drumwork, Danny Eisenberg on Keys and Chalie Sexton's guitar leads and you have some awesome music. There are just too many really good songs here to pick a favorite, but my eyes seem to water up with joy whenever I hear "Morning is My Destination". Check out her homepage and MYSPACE for more.

If you have the opportunity to see Tift live Go !! She puts on an incredible high energy performance. Heck, just look at the wear surrounding the pickguard of her Gibson guitar - she rocks ! If you like Sheryl Crow, Patti Griffin, Kathleen Edwards, Carol King, Joni Mitchell, E. Lou Harris, or Dusty Springfield you will enjoy.

Free Music Review: Another Country, Merritt's best CD.
Hit: 5 Stars

Tift Merritt has a voice of an angel, reminescent of a young Joni Mitchell. Her last album was nominated for a grammy, and as good as that record was this new one is better.

She presents this excellent album of 11 self penned songs featuring her beautiful unforced voice with haunting harmonies and jangling guitars (Charlie Sexton plays on this record). Each song is a gem, not a dud track amongst them.

Whilst it is only April I can safely predict that this record will be one of my favourite CD's of 2008.

The final track Mille Tendresses has French vocals as a nod to Paris were Merritt resided whilst writing the songs for this album, that was recorded in LA. It works very well as a tie in to the liner notes she writes about her stay in the French capital.

Free Music Review: Merci, Tift
Hit: 5 Stars

So the story is that Tift Merritt found her "life in a disarray", and went to Paris to write songs and figure things out. The result is Another Country, and the songs represent her search for love, hope, truth, grace. The songs throughout seem very intimate and personal. There are no big vocal flourishes but just her beautiful solid voice. But she can express more in songs like "Another Country" or "Keep You Happy" with her straightforward approach than others try with all their histrionics. Also notable are the upbeat single "Broken", the seductive "Morning Is My Destination", and "My Heart Is Free" about a soldier dying in battle. Ultimately Another Country is hopeful and uplifting, and a wonderful gift from this talented woman.

Free Music Review: Can't wait to get the CD of Another Country
Hit: 5 Stars

I had never heard of Tift Merritt, but this morning on my way to work Bob Edward interviewed her on XM public radio with his inimitable class. She sounded so genuine and unassuming, and when she talked about living in Paris I was immediately smitten.

Being a Francophile myself who has spent time in Paris, I knew exactly what she meant about the French shop keeper spending four hours arranging cheeses in his window. Then they played the cut from Another Country where she sings in French, and I just had to buy the album. I haven't even bought it yet, and I'm already writing a review. I wish her much luck and success in the cut-throat music business.

Free Music Review: Just discovered Tift
Hit: 5 Stars

Listening to Boston's folk radio station (WUMB) is the place where I can hear the gamut of new and old musicians. I must say I was pleasantly surprised after hearing 'Something to Me.' So surprised that I bought this new cd yesterday, the day of it's release. I definitely recommend this cd/artist to anyone who enjoys Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith or Patty Griffin. The melodies are great and the lyrics are poetic and accessible. I'm very happy to have found a new artist to follow. Now all I need to do is listen to her whole catalog.

Thanks Tift! Hope to see you live when you come to the Northeast.
