Free Music Notes for Another CountryFree Music Review: Grand but Subdued Hit: 4 Stars
Tift Merritt's latest effort, long in coming, proves that she is a songwriter of range and merit. This album is somewhat more subtle than
her previous effort, 2004's "Tambourine" and it suffers for it. Even still, it was well worth the wait.
Free Music Review: Very fine, indeed Hit: 4 Stars
Always heard good things about Tift; finally listened and agreed. Country, folk and rock are all here. I do think it a mistake, though, to make listeners go to her website to find her lyrics.
Free Music Review: If you like Tift Merritt, you'll like "Another Country" Hit: 4 Stars
More like "Bramble Rose" than "Tambourine". Check out "I Know What I'm Looking For Now," "Broken," and "Something To Me". :-)
Free Music Review: Bought on Faith Hit: 4 Stars
I bought this CD on Faith based on other music I like. Pretty great shot in the dark!
Free Music Review: Disappointing effort from a great talent Hit: 2 Stars
I am honestly suprised to see such positive reviews of this album. Where Bramble Rose was urgent and engaging, and Tambourine can rightfully claim to be a landmark album I would place up there with Tapestry as a classic in the female singer/songwriter genre, I found Another Country to be self-absorbed and tedious. In the process of moving to Paris to "discover herself", or whatever other self-indulgent artistic reason she had for doing it, Tift managed to completely lose sight of the musical and cultural roots that drove her music. I can only hope that making Another Country helped Tift find what she was looking for on a personal level, because she completely fails to make any connection whatsoever with this particular listener - all she managed to do was bore me.
Readers would be much better off turning to something recent by Kathleen Edwards or Sarah Harmer.
