Easily one of the best albums released this year, BRAMBLE ROSE is a tremendous album from Houston-born, North Carolina-based Tift Merritt. A longtime fixture in the Tarheel State's alternative-country music circuit, both solo and with the Two Dollar Pistols, Tift and her band the Carbines got together with producer Ethan Johns, who had worked with his father Glyn on the 1999 Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris album WESTERN WALL, in Los Angeles to make this fine mix of country, rock, and folk that is both modern and a throwback to that city's country-rock scene of the early 1970s.Tift wrote all eleven songs on this album, showing a songwriting intelligence equal to her Lost Highway labelmates Lucinda Williams and Kim Richey. At times, she even takes inspiration from Sheryl Crow (as on "Neighborhood"). Her real intention, however, as she has stated, was to make an album in the tradition of Linda, Emmylou, and Bonnie Raitt. BRAMBLE ROSE shows that she learned a great deal from these legendary ladies and managed to meld these influences into her own style. Tift is someone to watch out for in 2002!
