Tim Buckley is no mere folkie. His first two records, Tim Buckley and Goodbye and Hello, were amazing pop-folk. Then the master came out with this.
Happysad is Buckley's big, bold, declaration. He is not here to strum and protest, but run about music, taking what he wants and making it his, in the bold 1960s style that turned rock from dance beat to the most comprehensive and inclusive music ever.
Actually, Happysad is folk rock, but it is folk rock starting to mutate. Buckley opens up the chords, making them long hallways on which he can paint: with his guitar, the vibraphone, and most of all, his most amazing instrument, his thick, deep, multifacited voicem, filled with wisfullness, gentleness, and intimidating sexuality and intimadating power.
This album does not quite have the open forms of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks--but comparisons here are not the point. Far more importantant is Buckley's musical courage, his dividend paying audacity, that would soon grow expednetially. He would soon be off to free jazz on Starsailor and later, funk on the crimminally underrated Greetings from L.A..
But even detached from its implcations, Happysad is a elegant, beautiful album.
