Free Music Review: Second to win, not first to lose. Hit: 4 Stars
Jesus Christ Superstar was, is, and always will be one of the most creative and outstanding rock collaborations of all time. The original cast recording is by far the best of all the recordings that have been made in the last three decades, but the one for the film comes in a well-deserved second.Naturally the Original Cast is the best, and I would reccommend that over this in a heartbeat. But this is also a great CD. First off, Carl Anderson is simply amazing as Judas. He sings with such emotion and has incredible technique, it may bring tears to your eyes. Ted Neeley is a different story. He has an OK voice, but sometimes it sounds very strange and he kind of portrays Jesus as whimpery and it gets mildly annoying. But in other parts, he flourishes. Yvonne Elliman expresses Mary Magdalene wonderfully, and Barry Dennen's portrayal of Pontious Pilate is stronger than ever, while Joshua Mostel is funny and unique as King Herod. Key Tracks: -"Heaven On Their Minds": Anderson's melancholy opening is incredible, and sets up the emotion for the album. -"Simon Zealotes": Larry T. Marshall is awesome as Zealotes and really brings a lot of energy into what I believe to be the best song of the play. -"The Temple": One of Neeley's better moments, I love this scene in the movie and he really hits the emotion during his "My temple should be..." bit. -"I Don't Know How To Love Him": Elliman shines as Mary, and the emotion is much stronger than I have ever heard. -"King Herod's Song": Mostel's humorous portrayal of Herod makes this song funny, yet still quite dark. -"Could We Start Again Please?": This was the first album to have this song. It is a beautiful song, and one of the best on the album. -"Trial Before Pilate": Dennen is incredible in this song. Amazingly powerful. The only thing that is bad about this CD is the sound quality. But I've looked beyond on that and I love this CD. Buy it along with the original. And buy the movie too.
Free Music Review: Awesome! Hit: 4 Stars
This recording of JCS is VERY good. Alot of people say that Ted Neely has a weak voice, which he does...but he makes up for it with the way his voice sounds. Hard to describe, but it really fits the part. Carl Anderson as Judas is of course amazing, but that goes without saying. Pilate is also pretty good....though not as good as the 1992 Australian Pilate. The bad parts of this recording are Yvonne Elliman. She way to hippie, and she moans and whines when she sings. Also the chorus and the music is pretty weak compared to other versions, Hosanna shows how weak the chorus really is. Try and see the movie version of this recording before you buy this cd, you will enjoy it much more. PS: Alot of people here say that they have heard ALL of the Superstar recordings, or BOTH of the Superstar recordings. Let me just say that there are over 40 professional cast albums, and I'm sure that none of you have heard them all. A few people also said that its the most complete version...well it isnt. There are several recordings made live (no,not bootlegs), which are more complete. This is also not the only version to include "Then We Are Decided". The Russian version included this song, and I think the Icelandic version as well.
Free Music Review: JCSS - A Funky Musical Odyssey Hit: 4 Stars
If only it were possible to combine the disparate elements of this fine recording and the original Broadway cast recording. Ted Neeley's Jesus can get a trifle whiny from time to time and he falls far short of Ian Gillan's definitive vocal acrobatics on track 2 of disc 2. All in all, however, his interpretation is worth listening to. Carl Anderson's Judas makes poor Murray Head seem like a pretender and the Soundtrack's chorus is distressingly out of tune at times (listen for a striking example of tone-deafness demonstrated by one woman on track 8 of disc 1 - you can't possibly miss her). The Soundtrack also includes some tunes that were not on the Broadway recording. Check out track 5 of disc 1, for example - the bass line rocks. Regardless of which version appeals to you, the music and the characters strike a chord. Much like Nikos Kazantazkis's controversial interpretations of Jesus and Judas in "The Last Temptation of Christ", this music breathes life into individuals who have been so lauded or vilified throughout history that we've lost any sense of the humanity that draws us to them. Sit back, close your eyes and enjoy the trip.
Free Music Review: So much good Hit: 4 Stars
This is definitely the best overall album for the JCS songs, although (as has been said before) Then We Are Decided is fairly pointless. The problem that keeps this from 5 stars is Yvonne as Mary. By herself, she's not that bad, but if you can find the Sarah Brightman versions of Everything's Alright and I Don't Know How to Love Him, they're just magnificent. The one other thing is I personally like a different Overture, I think it's the one from the 20th Anniversery London edition.
But for this version specifically, Jesus and Judas are awesome, and Caiaphas' voice is as inimitable as it is incredible. Watching the movie helps a little, especially in Everything's Alright with the way Judas and Jesus interact.
Best songs... Heaven on Their Minds, This Jesus Must Die (tho I don't get the drumming thing), Gethsemane, Last Supper, and Trial Before Pilate.
Low points, like I said, Yvonne's singing style (scooooop everything) bothers the hell out of me, so I Don't Know How is really weak and Everything's Alright is also subpar, and the ending to Simon Zealotes isn't very technically sound, if you get my drift.
Anyway, get this CD. For sure.
