Free Music Notes for Jesus Christ Superstar: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack AlbumFree Music Review: A very good recording of JCS Hit: 5 Stars
I own both the London Concept Recording with Ian and Murray Head and the JCS movie soundtrack*. Some people say one is better than the other (usually it is people putting down this soundtrack and praising the original concept version). I have no idea why so many people hate this recording because I absolutely love it. Ted Neely is just different from Ian Gillian. Gillian gives a wonderful performance, and so does Neely. Gillian has a more hard rock voice while Neely has more emotion in his singing. You can hear Neely's hurt, confusion, fear, and frustrations. "Gethsemane" by Neely is very powerful, and I actually prefer it over Gillian's (I love Gillian- he's not bad at all, I just LOVE Neely). Carl Anderson is a -wonderful- Judas. He has such a powerful voice, and you can really relate to him. I love his "Heaven on their minds". All of his solos are wonderful! You can hear his agony and anger. "Superstar" is also fantastic. Yvonne Elliman is from the Original Concept album, and so is Barry Dennon. Both wonderful singers! The Caiaphas is exceptional on this album- his voice is wonderful! I find the Annas a bit annoying because of the high voice, but I guess it's supposed to be like this! The only casting I would change is the Herod because he can't really sing! I highly recommend this album because it is wonderful! Get the DVD!!!
*I actually made my own soundtrack from the dvd because I have heard that the actual cd has bad sound quality- the one I made is the same quality of the dvd and is excellent.
Free Music Review: This is the one that ROCKS Hit: 5 Stars
If you seek this out because you are a fan of Broadway musicals, then you would probably prefer the original versions. But if you are a ROCK fan, as I am, you would definitely prefer this one, because it rocks much harder. Perhaps it is because the film soundtrack has a much more American sound and feel to it that I like it so much. I think people are being unfair to Ted Neeley. I like him a lot better because his voice has this great untamed redneck quality to it that is far more appropriate for rock music than the smoother, more technically accomplished Broadway styles on the earlier version. I think the style of the soundtrack is more early-to-mid seventies than hippie - it has a harder edge. Both the soundtrack and the film itself have more glammy and funk elements. The movie is way more bad-..., campy and fun - I especially enjoy the S&M high priests. Finally, it doesn't have that "close" sound that Broadway cast recordings so often and so annoyingly have, where it sounds like the entire cast is crammed into a closet. If you just want to rock out and don't take this musical completely seriously, this is the one to get - like a lot of seventies rock, it's wonderfully over-the-top.
Free Music Review: The Most Musically Minded, Emotional Rollercoaster Ride Hit: 5 Stars
First, this is not an album purely for people who believe in Jesus Christ, it has nothing to do with it.It tells a story which some people may have found uninteresting, in a way which captures your imagination, plays with your emotions and begs you to become part of the entire musical. The muscial arrangement is fabulous, the singers are terrific. Ted Neeley (Jesus) has a superb range to his voice and makes you want to "wail" with him. Carl Anderson (Judas) has soul seeping from him at every step. Every other member of the cast are equally as brilliant. For those people who have not seen the Motion Picture from which this was taken, you may not fully understand or appreciate the passion that is expressed by the characters. The picture itself is a complete work of art. I would and do have both the soundtrack and the picture. Having seen the picture, the expressions that are portrayed by the characters are so easily felt by the listener, which makes the whole experience infinitely superior. For the 70's music lovers the rhythm guitars and wah wah's are just tremendous. This is an album which I could not be without. A must for anyone who likes music. SERIOUSLY.
Free Music Review: Listen to this one first Hit: 5 Stars
If you are buying a JCS set, I urge you to listen to this set before buying another. As is often the case when there are multiple recordings of a work, the first one you ever listen to often becomes the standard by which you judge others. I've never heard another JCS, and I don't care to. Ted Neeley's voice expresses the right amount of emotion, self-doubt, and questioning that are hallmarks of the Jesus role. Judas is just outstanding. Mary Magdalene was not a good choice, but it doesn't get in the way. Pilate is quite good too I think. But in my mind the biggest reason to buy this set is Andre Previn conducting, more so than even Lloyd Webber composing. I respect Andre Previn as a consummate musician more than I will ever respect Andrew Lloyd Webber(even though I feel this is the best thing Webber has done). Previn proves himself a master of many musical genres, and he is fabulous here. Also a note about the reviewer of July 31,1999. Shame on you for your bigoted remarks about one of the characters sounding "gay". Besides reflecting a stereotype, it is not relevant. It only shows your own bias. This is a great set.
Free Music Review: JCS: The Ultimate Rock Opera and a great take on Jesus' tale Hit: 5 Stars
I am 25 years old, and i still remember holding the booklet for this thing and wondering about how they managed to take Jesus pics if there weren't any cameras at that time. Ted Neeley was Jesus to me. The movie is just one of the best musicals out there, it's got strenght and beauty, sadness and joy. This record is the BEST JCS recording there is. "Gethsemane", "The Last Supper", "Heaven On Their Minds", "Could We Start Again?" and "I Don't Know How To Love Him" are true masterpieces. This is the way i see Jesus, as a human being as in Last Temptation Of Christ, and this recording is so full of passion it will bring tears to your eyes and shake you like few things out there. I know most people from my generation don't give a damn about this sort of thing, most think KoRn or Slipknot are the only music out there. When Antichrist Superstar came out, i knew Manson was not an idiot, he took a great icon in modern music and used it in his own interpretation. Listen to this thing. Give it a try, it's really moving.
