Free Music Notes for Jesus Christ Superstar: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Album

Free Music Review: Great CD!
Hit: 5 Stars

I had never seen the movie or heard the songs before I bought this JC Superstar CD, but I have been a long-time fan of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. I have to say this is, in my opinion, his greatest masterpiece. The story is a little hard to follow if you haven't read up on the New Testament or seen the movie, but after listening to the CD for awhile, it all falls into place. Some people say Ted Neeley is a wimpy Jesus, but you have to give him some credit for hitting those high notes! Mary Magdelene has a very sweet, pure voice, and Judas is absolutely PHENOMENAL! He has unbelievable talents. Some of the best numbers are "Heaven On Their Minds", "I Don't Know How To Love Him", "The Last Supper", "King Herod's Song", "Could We Start Again Please?", and of course, "Superstar". I would highly recommend this CD, especially to anyone who likes Andrew Lloyd Webber's works, because in some ways it is similar to "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and some of the others.

Free Music Review: In my mind, this is the *only* "JCS" soundtrack to have!
Hit: 5 Stars

Having seen the musical a number of times on stage and having seen the movie more times than I can remember, I remain a huge fan of "Jesus Christ Superstar," as presented by Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Yvonne Elliman. This is truly an outstanding presentation of incredible material, and I highly recommend it over any other version. I'm quite shocked by the reviews calling these tremendous actors' voices "weak" or "passive" -- I see no basis for this whatsoever. Truly, Ted Neeley is absolutely stellar in the role of Christ -- he is decidedly *not* passive, but incredibly emotional (which one would think is a requirement for the role!). Carl Anderson's performance actually elicits pity for the cursed Judas. . .and might even make one hope he was pardoned. Yvonne Elliman's voice is sweet and poignant -- her "I Don't Know How to Love Him" is beautiful. The entire soundtrack is haunting, and the instruments are far better on this version than on any of the others. What more does an audience need?!

Free Music Review: BY FAR the best recording of JCS
Hit: 5 Stars

The original motion picture soundtrack of Jesus Christ Superstar is far superior to any other I've ever heard. The original concept album is HORRIBLY arranged, while Previn works wonders with the score on the film soundtrack. The three principals (Jesus, Judas, Pilate) are outstanding, contributing to this version's being the best ACTED of all. This is also the only version I'm aware of which includes "Then We Are Decided"--a short number which is, in my mind, absolutely crucial to the play, in that it makes the position of Caiaphas much more understandable and sympathetic. Without it, Caiaphas, Annas, & co. are little more than one-dimensional, thoughtless bad guys.

The only notable flaws with this version are some relatively poor song transitions and a less than stellar version of the crucifixion scene. Avoid watching the garish and dated film itself; it's almost bad enough to spoil the wonderful experience of this record.

Free Music Review: Very Different - Yet Very Familiar
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, you should buy the original and listen to the hell out of it. I spent my youth riding around in my dad's car with the 8-track plugged in quite a bit. Then, buy the movie version (this one) and listen to it. At first, you'll hate it. Give it a chance though, because you will learn to love it in a completely different way. It amazes me. I bought this one in the early nineties and then listened to the original again (after a ten year break). They are so different -- especially the movie version's Ted Neely as Jesus. Yvonne Elliman is in both and she is amazing. Carl Anderson (Judas) will make you lay back and wonder why God gave him that voice and not you because it has to be so cool to be able to sing like him. So much emotion - depth - and voice. He is INCREDIBLE! Incredible! You can't go wrong by buying this because it really will be a whole different experience from the original.

Free Music Review: Entirely worth it!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album, though having pretty bad sound quality, it really one of the best recordings of Jesus Christ Superstar. It features some of the best performances of all time in the roles. Ted Neeley, though not being the best singer the role of Jesus has ever had, conveys strong emotion in the songs and can send chills is "Gethsemane". Carl Anderson is sublime as Judas and makes you feel for the character in a way that only himself and Murray Head have done before or since. Yvonne Elliman and Barry Dennen *are* Mary Magdelene and Pontious Pilate. Enough said there. The rest of the cast are also excellent and you often forget the sound quality because you are sucked into this brilliant rock Passion. This album is entirely worth buying and you are sure to cherish it for years to come.
