Free Music Review: Do Melodramitics Equal Greatness?

Many of the reviews I've read on 50's/ 60's pop singer Timi Yuro make her sound like the Janis Joplin of Middle Of the Road. "Female singers were undervalued back then, so she had to be better than the best", yadda yadda yadda. But the "something special" we got from her was an overwrought delivery that made Liza Minelli seem mellow by comparison. In reality, there wasn't a song she did which, if also done by another artist, wasn't done better in the cover version. Her version of "Hurt" was topped by a wide margin by an ACTOR, would you believe--George Maharis, who came to the mike as a fringe benefit from his role alongside Martin Milner in the series "Route 66". Maharis was no great shakes as a singer, but at least you could make out the melody. This was a time when any twentysomething TV star had to come out with a 45rpm single for the teenyboppers. As for "Make The World Go Away", easycountry star Eddy Arnold easily (pun not intended) blew Yuro's version away. I'm no fan of country no matter how you look at it, but what did Eddy do with the song? He stuck to the mel-o-dy, no histrionics. A lot of listeners forget that when they rhapsodize over a "soulful" treatment. You carry that concept too far and you get acting, not music. The only song I remember from Yuro's heyday that you could identify as hers and hers alone was "What's A Matta Baby", a blunt sneer at a man who breaks hearts getting his own broken. Or as Gen X'ers would put it decades later, what goes around comes around. I don't like "Watsa Matta" much either, but there's no denying that it has validity and identity. All in all, though, Timi Yuro was a very mediocre talent (if that's not an oxymoron) and the obstacles she supposedly faced to success have nothing to do with her value as a musician.
