The definitive last word on Tiny's Reprise era? Not quite, but then, there's (alas) limited appeal in his recordings...to a point. Conversely, I don't EVER see Capitol releasing an equivalent box set of Mrs. Miller's recordings (Bear Family might take the dare) for obvious reasons! As stated in Dr. Demento's liner notes, he was a unique historian of music from the late 1800s through the 1950s: moreso because he was a PERFORMER of this material years before the nostalgia craze of the latter 1960s hit. Before "Winchester Cathedral", before "Hello, Hello", there was this tall, odd-looking man with the one-of-a-kind voice (this ukelele player was NO Arthur Godfrey, thank the Lord!)....All the recordings are expertly remastered by Dan Hersch; still, some tape hiss is noticeable in some spots more than others, but it's inevitable given the era in which this was all recorded. Casual listeners will pass on this as it is an investment, whether at retail OR at sale price! (Those who might want to download any of Tiny's Reprise LPs off Amazon can NOW do so, because as of December 15, 2009, this set became available for MP3 download. All the MUSIC costs a fraction of the BOX SET itself! "Cherry pick" your favorite tracks or grab every last song from this set for the BEST sound; the experience WON'T be the same without the booklet, however. WARNING: the previously-reissued downloads of Tiny's 1st and 3rd LPs on Amazon are BOTH record dubs.) This release is as much for fans of Mr. Tim as it is for followers of Bing Crosby, Rudy Vallee, Al Jolson and other vintage recording artists of the early 20th century, not to mention followers of songwriters long lost to history....I wouldn't mind if this set had a FOURTH disc covering the demos that couldn't fit onto three CDs, plus ANY outtakes that featured just Tiny TALKING! Regardless, Rhino Handmade has given Tiny Tim's admirers a collection of recordings that's best described as an INHERITANCE (or, in my case, a Christmas present)!...All the best, Brother Fang.
