Free Music Notes for 3dFree Music Review: TLC Forever Hit: 5 Stars
3D implies animation, larger than life and 360-degree penetrable perspective... "utter extraness." On 3D, the fourth album by TLC, surviving members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas have put their best feet forward to give fans the hottest album that they could, given the tragic circumstance of their "sister," Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes', untimely passing. The rapper (30) died driving an SUV that flipped over while vacationing in the Honduras last April."3D INTRO" Dropping interpolated Bombs over Baghdad, the duo welcomes you into their world while Dallas Austin kicks a perky, new wave drum-n-bass opening. "QUICKIE" This one is a crack up, penned by Left Eye and T-Boz with Dallas Austin. Like the corniest college professor you'll ever meet, Left Eye opens the song putting females up on game regarding the Ionetic concept of "Left Pimpin'" (it's located in the region of...your man). From there, the ladies do what they do best...dis the deserving! It's a funky sequel to "No Scrubs" on which the zingers are flying about men with "premature ejaculation" issues. "First he came/And then he went...right to sleep on me/I could not believe/Wake it up and give me what I need!!!" An instructional video for this would be right up MTV's overly horny reality shows alley right about now. "GIRL TALK" This first single is the perfect segue out of "Quickie." All three girls address the men directly this time about keeping their game tight, or feeling the wrath of being talked about to all their girlfriends. Key line: "Some of y'all be killin' me/ Thinkin' you got powers like Austin but you're more like Mini Me/And when you finally get your blood flowin'/It be lookin' like a pinkie with a glove on it." Edmund Clement (also leader of the new group Hustlechild) hooked this one up with the hypnotic rhythm guitar line--an instant TLC classic. "TURNTABLE" This is the "Waterfalls" of the album, a melodic, semi-acoustic ode to living life to the fullest everyday primarily penned by producer Rodney Jerkins with T-Boz and a few others. "We all don't know the answers, believe and trust when I say/That having faith is always the way to make things okay." "IN YOUR ARMS TONIGHT" The Neptunes strike again with a moody, strangely sexy, minor key track that has Pharrell Williams all over it. Set the mood for this with a red light... "OVER ME" This club joint marks one of Chilli's biggest writing contributions ever--a collabo with Rodney Jerkins and his crew. This one's about telling a guy that he had his chance, blew it and now has "gotta get over me." "Gave my world, I can't understand it/Now I'm gone and you can't handle it." Oh, my.... "HANDS UP" Babyface and Darryl Simmons weave a web of ghetto intrigue on this tale that plays out like "Creep: The Dark Side." T-Boz discovers her man cheating on her in such a way that it's almost as if she's seeing a completely different man. This is some of the most soulful singing to come from both T-Boz and Chilli...pretty lowdown by their standards. I was waiting for Nate Dogg to tip in for a line or two. Go 'Face! "DAMAGED" This is a smash and one of the project's most pleasant surprises. It's a soft rocker with live bass, drums and guitar that kicks up a nice cloud of audio gold dust. Top 40 radio will love its great chorus, melody and power chords. The ladies will really work up a sweat performing this (produced by Dallas Austin who penned it with T-Boz). "DIRTY" Timbaland and Missy bring the unbridled ATLien TLC party track. And, of course, Missy helps her sistas out with some rhymes. A moment of silence toward the end is provided out of respect to Left Eye, who would have loved (and freaked) this high-energy joint. (note: T-Boz & Chilli return Missy & Tim's favor by guesting on "Can You Hear Me" from Missy's Under Construction album, in-stores the same day as 3D). "SO SO DUMB" Producer Raphael Saadiq makes keenly insightful use of the different timbres of T-Boz and Chilli's voices, shifting them back and forth over the chorus, all the while mixing in live strings, church organ and a mellow electric piano track. Not so mellow is T-Boz singing to a man here about the stupidity of cheating on a woman who so purely and blindly loves him. It's another of Saadiq's "gospeldelic" message tunes (penned with T-Boz). "GOOD LOVE" Edmund Clement's second contribution is a softer, sweeter piece that he co-wrote with former Xscape member Kandi Burrus. This is a cool, feel-good, album track--Saturday in the sunshine music featuring Chilli (is this for Usher?) and T-Boz. "HEY HEY HEY" This is a mid-tempo, high-tech kiss-off joint from Rodney Jerkins, with the same synth sounds and voice manipulators that he poured all over Brandy's Full Moon album. T-Boz and Kandi Burrus lyricized this one. "GIVE IT TO ME WHILE IT'S HOT" Organized Noize sends the album off into the sunset with some sexy Southern steam. "I scratch your neck and my eyes roll back for you/Oh, baby/I'm burnin' up/It's time to turn it up/Get in the middle and stir it up/Give it to me while it's hot." Left-Eye is featured in a mid-song rap that smacks of "get in where you don't quite fit in..." Her rhyme takes the theme of the song...left. "As you can see/ There's two different dreams/Her thoughts are so pure/His as low as the floor..." In all, 3D is no CrazySexyCool, but neck and neck with Fan Mail--a smorgasbord of vibrations that will provide several radio smashes and satisfy their devoted fan base. TLC is forever.
