Free Music Review: An Album Which Transcends Musical Boundaries
Hit: 5 Stars

When Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes died in 2002 I thought it was about time I invested in a TLC album. I had always liked the band's music in the past but wasn't sure if I would like an entire album of material. I felt this way for a few years until I saw "CrazySexyCool" on sale over Christmas 2003. I bought it straight away and for a few months didn't listen to it much at all. You can only listen to so much music, and Bjork was currently taking up all my air time. However, when I really started playing this album in 2004 I realised just how funky and important a record it actually is.

Released in 1994, this was the album which made TLC the R'n'B legends they are today. It sold more than 10 million copies in America alone! For a solely R'n'B band, that is absolutely incredible. Even Destiny's Child haven't managed to sell that much of one album. So why did this record sell so much? I believe it was down to the incredible music on the album and the way in which TLC's style transcended musical boundaries. They came up with the hit singles which everyone loved and could identify with. It wasn't just R'n'B lovers who were buying this album, in other words. Other successful examples of records that have transcended their musical boundaries from the Nineties are Shania Twain's "Come On Over" and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill," both with mammoth sales of 20 million and 16 million respectively in America alone.

The album opens with the fabulous "Intro-lude" which is just over one minute long but could perfectly stand as a song in its own right if it were a few minutes longer. The album title is whispered over and over to get you in the mood for the themes of the album. This leads us into the funky "Creep," which was one of TLC's biggest ever hits. The girls sing about creeping out of the house to meet up with other guys, while their boyfriend's are at home. The reason for this? Because they know their boyfriends are doing exactly the same to them. Superb slick song about female empowerment. "Kick Your Game" is a very sharp and tight song with great beats and an undeniable groove. Lisa's raps are great and also rather funny. "Diggin' On You" has to be one of the flyest songs I've ever heard! The vocals of all three girls are amazing on this song and the beat is really soulful. This is one of those summer time anthems that you can just relax to, especially with the lyrics, "I was like peace, in a groove, on a Sunday afternoon."

"Case Of The Fake People" has a slamming beat which really draws you in. It's a very classy song where the girls talk about the fakeness of the industry. The chorus is very catchy and you can sing along to it so well. "CrazySexyCool - Interlude" picks up where the intro left off, but I always tend to skip this. "Red Light Special" is where the girls get really sexy with lyrics which will melt your earphones! They sing of entertaining their man without any shame of feeling dirty or degraded. They are, indeed, the one's in control and it's much classier than say Janet's "Would You Mind" or "Moist." Then of course we have the masterpiece of the record in the form of the classic "Waterfalls." In stark contrast to the sexy feeling of the last song, this song has a very serious message about life on the whole. The video is absolutely amazing because of the messages it puts across, and it tells you straight away not to get into deep water if you don't know what you're doing. The waterfalls obviously represent the downfall of each particular person as the girls warn, "Don't go chasin' waterfalls." This song always sends chills down my spine because it's so poignant but also very peppy because of the instruments used. This juxtaposition is what makes it chilling. A classic song that will stand the test of time.

"Intermission-lude" is another boring interlude followed by the superb "Let's Do It Again." This song is similar to Diggin' On You but a bit lighter and I think Chilli really gets to show off her vocals here. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is a great song which turns the pace of the album right around. The beat is dark and almost intimidating, and I'm sure Beyonce sampled this on her duet with Jay-Z's "Bonnie & Clyde '03." Another interlude follows in the form of "Sexy - Interlude" which is rather dirty and funny at the same time! "Take Our Time" is a slower song with a sexy beat, although it's not really one of my favourites. "Can I Get A Witness - Interlude" continues the theme of the first few interludes on the album and features Busta Rhymes. "Switch" is a rather funky song with a bit of an old-skool feel to it. It's not really one of my favourites though. The album closes with "Somethin' Wicked This Way Comes" which ends the album on a fine note. There's a real message in this song and Andre 3000's raps are also rather interesting.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

In the end I'd have to say that this is one of my favourite R'n'B albums ever. It's not the best I've ever heard, but I can see exactly why it sold so many copies. This was definitely one of the best albums of the Nineties and deserves a place in anybody's collection. The album is mainly focused on love, but always has a song which contrasts this about cheating men. The album juggles the highlights and lowlights of a relationship, and also has a few strong political messages. This in itself commands respect. The Spice Girls might have taken over the entire universe, but TLC were always more critically-acclaimed.
