Free Music Review: Bluebird Cafe Magic

I am a little surprised there hasn't been more discussion in these reviews about the Bluebird Cafe. Having been there a number of times, I can say it is without a doubt one of the best experiences any music fan can have to hear singer/songwriters swapping stories and songs in this venue. It is essentially like sitting in someone's living room, mere feet away from the performers who are sitting in the middle of the room (Songwriters in the Round). This album captures that intimacy so well. And I can't imagine being there for the performances of 3 legends like Guy, Steve, and Townes. To give you an idea of how intimate these shows are, I have been to performances where particularly poignant stories are told and songs performed, not leaving a dry eye in the house. Guy's "Randall Knife" on this album is exactly the type of thing I'm talking about. Make whatever judgments you like about the quality of each performer's vocal skills, but that is not what folk music is all about. Its about the story. In my opinion, this album captures 2 things perfectly -- first, the indescribable intimacy of the Bluebird Cafe; second, the very essence of singer/songwriter performances. I would recommend this album to anyone.

Pulled together for an Interfaith Dental Clinic benefit by Guy Clark's wife Susanna, the three old friends sing songs and tell stories in an intimate acoustic-and-a-stool atmosphere in front of an appreciative audience--what more can you ask for when you have such compelling songwriters?
