Free Music Review: Scream
Hit: 4 Stars

This is Tokio Hotels first record in English. The translations are excellent and the fact that most of the songs were wrighten and translated by Bill and Tom adds to the sound.

Free Music Review: Teens Scream
Hit: 3 Stars

The USA debut of German Teenaged phenomenon Tokio Hotel is an interesting set. Like so many German bands before them (think Scorpions), they had to be taught the lyrics in phonetic English. It does lessen the impact from the singing, but lead vocalist Bill Kaulitz knows his way around a good yelp. He also knows his way around a box of guyliner, enough so that the pictures of the band make him almost look like they're trying to bring back hair metal.

That would be pretty far from the truth, though. Tokio Hotel play bright, melodic rock that teeters on the edge of glam, along with the usual over-emotional teenaged drama for lyrics. The band also has a way with a good hook, with the singles "Ready Set Go" and "Monsoon" guaranteed brain ticklers. (Nice touch is including the original German language "Monsoon" as a bonus track.) However, it is their biology that gets the better of them in the end.

Unlike, for instance, Wolfmother or Light from Above, the players in Tokio Hotel don't sound like they've been playing their instruments since time began. Excepting the ballad "Sacred" and the two key singles, there's not much variety here. That's not to sell "Scream" short, just to say that Tokio Hotel just need to do a little more growing up before they move from good/competent to great. After all, Motley Crue went from Too Fast for Love to Shout at the Devil in one jump. Tokio Hotel are just young enough to suspect that there could be a creative explosion just ready to break loose.
