Free Music Review: Acid Jazz meets Brazilian Samba

I listened to Tom & Joy's "Antigua" around the same time I listened to Daniela Mercury's new album "Bale Mundo." I love both artists. Unfortunately, Mercury's album was a major disappointment. I feared that I would have the same experience with Tom & Joy's sophomore album. Luckily, Tom & Joyce's album did not disappoint. This is a wonderful album.
On "Antigua," the pair strikes out in a new artistic direction from their previous self-titled album does. On their first album, the musical arrangments were primarily a mix of samba/bossa nova and electronica. The mood of the last album was summery. On "Antigua," the feel is more mature, sophisticated and a smooth mix of samba/acid jazz alternated with traditional bossa nova songs. Horns sections,drumming, and even a harmonica can be heard on a lot of the uptempo songs. The arrangments are on par with some of the greats in acid jazz (Stevie Wonder, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Monday Michiru, and others.) And if you can get the Shock Records version, there's a really nice Japanese language version by Tom & Joyce of "Vai Minha Tristeza" :); and some remixes of Antigua's songs.
If you're into traditional electronica with samba then you should enjoy Tom & Joyce's first self-titled cd. If you're in the mood for acid jazz, then this cd would be a keeper.
