Free Music Notes for The Remains of Tom Lehrer

Free Music Review: Very funny and entertaining, but repetitive
Hit: 4 Stars

If you like song parody and have given a listen or three to Tom Lehrer before, this boxed set is almost a must-have. Rarities such as Lehrer's work for "The Electric Company" and his very few new works make it a must-have for fans and should grab neophytes as well. However, his two early live albums are essentially his studio albums repeated with comments. The comments, like much else here, are biting and still of note, but the music sounds almost the same. If you're new to Leher, try one of the other albums offered by Amazon.com, but odds are you'll want more and buy this evenutally.

Free Music Review: Great Nostalgia, but Repetitive
Hit: 3 Stars

It was interesting to listen to the compendium of Lehrer songs, many of which I had only heard in excerpts or through rumor. It's remarkable how well some of them have held up, for topical humor. I was surprised, though, by how many of them were gruesome and macabre. Some of his humor wasn't all that funny. Even so, I laughed out loud at "National Brotherhood Week" and "Werher Von Braun," and a few others. And all the recordings are from really high-quality masters. It could have been recorded yesterday.

Not so heartwarming, though, was the sheer repetitiveness of the set. CD's 1 and 2 are virtual duplicates of each other, one being studio recordings and the other live performances. And it's remarkable how similar they are. Boy, he rehearsed one delivery style and then he stuck to it.

The third CD has some great songs not on the other two, but it also has a lot of fluff from The Electric Company and some orchestrated versions of songs on the other two disks. Lehrer's voice and delivery really don't lend themselves to orchestra accompaniment.

My recommendation? Unless you're a serious Lehrer fan, find a single CD that has most of the songs you like, and stick with that.

Free Music Review: Too Many Repeats
Hit: 3 Stars

I am not sure that this three disk set is worth it. All three disks are really a repeat of each other with very few differences. But, the songs are still great after all these years.

Free Music Review: Enjoyable, but not a compilation and very repetitive
Hit: 2 Stars

Discs 1 and 2 are the same songs - except disc 1 has 2 of the newer songs and that's the only difference. Just different live performances. Disc 3 had minimal repeating of songs on the first two. So you basically get a book with lyrics and some other interesting information (book is decent) and 2 CDs. Plus, I happen to have heard enough of Mr. Lehrer's interesting songs to realize this isn't all of them. I expected to enjoy the CDs anyway, but the box set turned out to be a big let down.

Free Music Review: Repetitive Redundancy
Hit: 2 Stars

I love Tom Lehrer's work, BUT... When you buy this boxed set, don't expect each of the CDs to have unique songs. The same songs appear on all three CDs. They may have been recorded at different times, but I had hoped to purchase a set of CDs with unique songs on them. Too much redundancy!
