Free Music Notes for The Live Anthology (4 CD)Free Music Review: Worth triple what you pay... Hit: 5 Stars
6 Disc Changer, New Mustang... These 4 CDs have held on to their slots for over 2 months. I can't take the darn things out. I think about changing them out, and I can't do it. I know that I've listened to the entire set 30 times... They are that good. I was never a Tom Petty fanatic. then I picked up the "Running Down a Dream" companion book at a really big bookstore that's like the line between 2 states... for like $7... and I was hooked. Other reviewers cover what's in the sets (and do it comprehensively and amazingly), so I won't do that. I will just say if you have a little Amazon credit lying around and you have the slightest inkling of Tome Petty fandom in your body (or if you don't, but like real, God's honest, American Rock and Roll) you HAVE to buy this set. It rivals the best live CDs I have ever heard. At some point (when I have the disposable income), I plan on buying the ultimate edition (or whatever they call it), but until then, this does beautifully... Besides, if I had a fifth disc, how would the 2 disc studio anthology fit in the 6 disc changer with this, right?
Free Music Review: anthology really really good!!! Hit: 5 Stars
-those who like tom petty can't lose with this!! its' a really nice piece of work!!! it is a collection of heart breakers stuff over 30 years or so, of LIVE performances. it is not time sequential, but a hodgepodge of venues and years...-nevertheless, IT WORKS! not only does it work, but very well!!!
the most significant thing to note, is sound quality!! i would personally like to shake the hand of whoever was responsible for the recording quality!!! -a job very well done!! if the collection sounded any better, it would be scary!!
-perfect for late, hot summer night top down driving with screaming volume!!! GET THIS ONE!! -there are some weak points that the 'ouch-cubes' i'm sure will hop on, but a true petty fan just goes yessssss!! and benmont & mike, smoke!! WHAT A BAND!! -i DO prefer stan lynch's drums to steve ferrone (back-up vocals too!!) but steve ferrone can play drums JUST FINE!! -for what it is worth 'running down a dream' DVD is well worth owning too, though it is more a documentary of the band.
Free Music Review: Great rockers having great fun. Hit: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful collection of performances. Not a greatest hits, but obviously chosen by Tom Petty for personal preference. Some groups are at their absolute best live, and the Heartbreakers are right up there with the all-time greats like Little Feat and the Allmans. What is particularly special are their tributes to the great British bands of the 60's - Fleetwood Mac, the Yardbirds, Them. Their covers of "I'm A Man" and "Oh Well" are just outstanding. There would have been other numbers they could have chosen that might have been a little easier to play, but no, the Heartbreakers go for the hard ones. Taking on any Peter Green song from that era is a challenge - Mike Campbell reproduces the Green Les Paul faithfully. Speaking of Mike Campbell, there is some awesome playing on a number of the Anthology's tracks, although it's probably unfair to single out Campbell, as they're all consummate musicians. An absolute "must have" for Heartbreakers fans and not a bad introduction for anyone unfamiliar with these icons of southern rock.
Free Music Review: Outstanding effort Hit: 5 Stars
Having to wade through what must have been hundreds of live performances to pick just 48, and grouping them together in the way that they were, had to have seemed initially to be an insurmountable task. I suspect that through the years, the boys must have been taking notes. (...like "wow, if we ever release a live anthology, these tracks Have To Be On It!" or something like that) That might have helped to narrow it down.
Sound quality was SUPERB!! Right from the beginning,Tom and the Heartbreakers took extra care with their SOUND that I think is unprecedented. That takes incredible commitment.
It's good that they did not strive for merely a greatest hits collection, it means you don't have to throw away 'Pack Up The Plantation'. I was glad to see that none of those tracks were reprised in the anthology.
Very interesting artwork. Somebody must have a ball creating that.
To sum up, it's a truly outstanding effort.
Free Music Review: Want American Rock & Roll - This is it Hit: 5 Stars
Good old fashion straight ahead US rock and roll from one of the best. It's been a long time coming, but this live anthology from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers has been worth the wait, you will love it. All the favorites are here, plus some surprises and unexpected covers.
Interestingly, Tom has chosen not to go with a linear presentation from the early days through to now, but has mixed it up and without any heavy-handed themes per CD. Each CD is just a good mix of songs that go together and bring the atmosphere and warmth of a live set to your living roon, or wherever you listen to this.
It is also great value, not that that is the most improtant thing, in fact it's probably the least important.
This is just a great collection of Tom Petty songs, put it on and you won't be able to stop your spirits rising, nor will you be able to stop yourself singing along (beware if playing it on the Metro).
Highly recommended.
