Free Music Notes for Anthology: Through the Years

Free Music Review: One of the best compilations......EVER!
Hit: 5 Stars

ALERT! This review is not for the diehard Petty fan - you guys already know all this stuff! No, this review is for the occasional listener, the fan who has liked Petty in the past but hasn't been quite sure where to start with his catalog. If that's the case "Anthology: Through the Years" is the CD for you. Much more representative of Petty's MCA years than the "Greatest Hits" CD but not as unwieldly as the six disc "Playback" boxed set, "Anthology" is one of the best thought-out compilations in years. Laid out in a chronologic format, you get to see all the peaks and valleys, the changes and variations, of the Heartbreaker's 25-year career. One of my biggest problems with most compilations is that they often barely touch upon, and sometimes even skip over, entire chunks of artist's career; "Anthology" wisely hits upon each of the MCA albums, offering up at least two or three tracks from each one (except for the live album and two other compilations, which are represented with one track each). That said, what are some of "Anthology"'s high points? Well, disc one opens with "Breakdown", still one of the best rock songs of the last twenty-five years. Up next we have "Hometown Blues" and "I Need To Know", two songs that Rosanne Cash and Stevie Nicks have, respectively, made their own. "Anthology" reminds you that the original versions were just as good as the covers. Also of interest is the inclusion of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", the first time the Nicks classic has ever appeared on a Petty release. While it fits right in with the rest of the "Hard Promises"-era tracks, I would have liked to have seen an alternate take or remix. Rounding out the first disc are "You Got Lucky" and "Change Of Heart", two haunting tracks who's lyrical romanticism and crisp production is as terrific now as it was almost twenty years ago and proves, once and for all, that "Long After Dark" was one of the group's most underrated - and underappreciated! - albums! Standouts on disc two include the psychodelic "Don't Come Around Here No More" , the powerful "The Best Of Everything" and the rockin' "Jammin' Me." All three tracks were immmediate classics the first time around and have stood the test of time very well. I'm also glad they included "So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star" from "Pack Up the Plantation", the group's live album: it shows A) that the group is one of the best live bands EVER and B) using horns to augment their sound is an idea that really works for them and one that should be used to greater extent in the future. Other tracks of merit include "I Won't Back Down" and "Two Gunslingers", an album track that proves (AGAIN!) it deserved to be a huge hit single the first time around. Rounding out the disc are two of my favorite tracks. "Waiting For Tonight", from "Playback", is one of Petty and the boys most melodic, tuneful songs to date. Floating out of the speakers, "Waiting...." features a slinky 60's groove and the Bangles on backing vocals, with excellent results - Tom has rarely sounded so well-supported and the Bangles have never sounded fuller, lusher or more harmonious (A suggestion to the Bangles...seriously consider using producer George Drakoulis for your new album; he works magic with your sound!). Why this song never showed up on a regular album is a mystery to me. The final track is "Surrender", a song Tom wrote in 1977 but only just recorded in 2000. If this is a sampling of the group's current musical direction I can't wait for their next CD (I also hope they continue to work with producer Bill Botrell)! So.....check this puppy out! It's one of the best collections ever released, and a great overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 25 year career. Sure, stuff is missing but, hey, you can't have everything! Trust me....this is the real thing!

Anthology: Through the Years Poster

Neatly fitting in between 1993's GREATEST HITS and the 5-CD PLAYBACK box set that came out two years later, this 34-track collection is a chronological tour of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' MCA Records material. The consistent quality found throughout this two-CD set that's bookended by the sinister-sounding "Breakdown" and chiming "Surrender"(a song Petty wrote in the '70s but didn't get around to recording until August 2000) boggles the mind.

Tight playing and a palpable sense of passion from the four-piece Heartbreakers transform songs like "Even the Losers", "Rebels" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" into rock & roll manna. Elsewhere, this Floridian singer-songwriter's sharp eye for pop culture ("Jammin' Me") and storytelling mastery ("Into the Great Wide Open," "Two Gunslingers") become pleasantly recurring characteristics. The inclusion of a scorching live version of the Byrds' "So You Wanna Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" show Petty and company to be as potent on stage as in the studio. By the end of this musical tour it's hard to argue with the lofty statement Cameron Crowe makes in his liner notes calling Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "...the greatest and most consistent American band of the last twenty-five years..."

The most striking thing about this two-disc overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is the powerful case it makes for its creators as the most consistent band of not only their era, but of all time. Think of another rocker who can claim to have created a quarter-century of recordings that, when ranked on a 10-point scale, never dip below a solid 7? Indeed, while disc 1 reflects a marginally more aggressive mindset than disc 2, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine the discs flip-flopped; maturity has yet to induce lethargy for Petty and the boys. Occupying the solid middle ground between the 18-track Greatest Hits and the six-disc Playback box, Anthology serves up 34 selections, nearly every one an FM staple. From 1976's "Breakdown" through the collection's only new offering, 2000's "Surrender," this retrospective never flags. But how could it? --Steven Stolder
