Free Music Notes for Anthology: Through the YearsFree Music Review: Into the Great Wide Open with Mr. Wilbury Hit: 5 Stars
I was one of the few listening to FM radio in the 1970's and caught "Breakdown" and "American Girl" and became an instant fan. At that time, I just LIKED them and their music. A sort of folksy rock and roll with definite Dylan and McGuinn thrown in.Then I saw them live in Florida and was HOOKED. "Breakdown"is a totally unique song, while "American Girl" shows the definite "Byrd/Roger McGuinn" influence, but much more R AND R in each one. The songs from the album that really launched them are here, (Damn the Torpedos) such as "Refugee" "Here Comes My Girl" "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Even The Losers" Then the videos started coming, with "Waiting, The","Woman In Love (It's Not Me), "You Got Lucky", and other top 30 entries. All were great tunes, top 40, with just enough rock. The maturity of the group was coming. Enter STEVIE NICKS and SOUTHERN ACCENTS. "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" hit the nail on the head - top 5. "Don't Come Around Here No More" was a production change, a much darker side and a new dimension for Tom Petty was showing. I never thought I would see the day when Tom would play with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, and Bob Dylan. The Wilbury Period started, and songs like "Free Falling" are the result. My favorite period of his career show the guitar influence of George Harrison (Beatles) and the Production of Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra). AOR, MOR, and TOP 40 were all playing his music, the audience expanded. "I Won't Back Down" and "Runnin' Down A Dream" are great, but my favorites are "Into The Great Wide Open" and "Learning To Fly" I wish there was more unreleased sides ad some concert stuff, (he did a great version of "Needles and Pins" with Stevie Nicks). Overall, a good deal for this caliber of music. No duds here, and it covers almost all the bases. If you want a great sample of good American Rock, this is for you! Tom Petty has played with the best because HE IS ONE OF THE BEST, with one of the best bands to boot. Worth your consideration.
Free Music Review: Shorter than the box set and longer than Greatest Hits = YES Hit: 5 Stars
I didn't have the money at the time to spend on Tom Petty's box set, and I would've got the Greatest Hits album, but I saw many notable abscences. Anthology - Through the Years took the best of both and gave me an extra option, which I took up right away.Anthology - Through the Years has all except one of the songs on the Greatest Hits album, and best of all, it has almost all the songs that I wanted to own, but that were not on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers's Greatest Hits album. It has "Love Is A Long Road" and "Yer So Bad," which were not included on their Greatest Hits. Granted, there are still a few songs that were left off of this collection that should've been included, such as "You Don't Know How It Feels," but Anthology - Through the Years has ALMOST all of the Tom Petty that most fans probably want to own. Also included along with the 2-cd compilation is a booklet that includes a few pictures of Tom Petty and his band, along with a short explanation by Cameron Crowe, about the selections that were made to be included in this album. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are one of the few bands who have stuck together for over 20 years and that are still going strong. Tom Petty is one of the most successful and one of the most influential artists of all time, and you'll see why as you listen to this collection. If you're looking for a great collection of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers songs that is a little better than their Greatest Hits effort, but a little shorter than their box set, Anthology - Through the Years is the one you're looking for! It has the must-have classics such as "Refugee," "Into The Great Wide Open," "Free Fallin'," and more. It also has some that might not be as well known, but that are great nonetheless, such as "Love Is A Long Road," and "Change of Heart." Finally, it even has a new song, "Surrender," which proves that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers still have the skill that they've always had.
Free Music Review: This One Doesn't Back Down Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great collection. It has all the songs found on 1993's Greatest Hits except Petty's cover of 'Something in the Air" which I wasn't that fond of anyway. It has the 4 significant songs from DAMN THE TORPEDOS and 5 songs from FULL MOON FEVER, probably Petty's 2 best albums. It has great, great songs not found on the 1993 Hits CD such as "Too Much Ain't Enough" from YOU'RE GONNA GET IT, "Yer So Bad" and "Love Is a Long Road" from FULL MOON FEVER, "A Woman In Love" from HARD PROMISES, "Rebels" from SOUTHERN ACCENTS and "Jammin' Me" and "It'll All Work Out" from LET ME UP. Also, the songs are presented in chronological order so you can get a sense of how the music has developed over the years (actually it's stayed very consistent).
Every song on this anthology is good - and most are simply great. I could have done without "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" - these two kind of drag on for me - but they are still OK songs. The cover of the Byrds song "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star" is also probably not essential to this set, but again it sounds fine.
The only real shortcoming is that CD 1 is only 57 minutes, so 2 or 3 more songs from his early era - maybe 1 or 2 more from HARD PROMISES - could have been added. But how can I complain. This is just a fantastic 2-CD set.
I don't detect a problem with the remastering as was mentioned in another review - sounds fine to me.
Finally, Mike Campbell is one of the best guitarists around. Talk about a perfect blend with Petty's voice. It's like Daltry and Townshend or Bono and the Edge or Ozzy and Iomi.
Free Music Review: Tom Petty for the kids, too! Hit: 5 Stars
Tom Petty is one of the rare musicians who will often play an arena filled with fans who weren't even born at the time his first great hits started to get radio time. I am one of those fans who grew up listening to him with my dad, and then appreciated the new music he continued to produce (and he's still at it!). If you find that you're in a similar situation, I highly recommend this double-CD set. It's cheaper than a box set and a much better selection than his "Greatest Hits" album (also good), but very importantly, it is just in-depth enough to provide a thumbnail sketch of Petty's development as a songwriter. Now, I find that I love Petty mostly because he produces pop music that stimulates, rather than insults, the intelligent listener. His solid command (throughout his career) of the rock genre is displayed on this collection. From his roots as a country/Southern rocker to his sophisticated SoCal rock album-- it doesn't get any better than "Full Moon Fever"-- you get a taste of everything. Personally, I also love "Two Gunslingers," "The Wild One, Forever," and "Straight into Darkness"-- all of which, for younger listeners like myself, might be introduced into familiar repetoire by this album. A real winner of a collection, worth (for once) the price.
Free Music Review: OVERDUE DOUBLE CD GREATEST HITS SET Hit: 5 Stars
The Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Anothology is a long overdue double CD of hits and standout tracks up to 1990, with one new track. This compilation effectively expands on the "single CD" greatest hits which left off "Jammin' Me", "Waiting For Tonight", "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", etc. which are all included here. It is also more accessible than the massive 6 CD "Playback" Box set. The songs all sound great and most stand up real well today and that includes the overplayed hits like "Free Fallin" and "Refugee". My only 2 complaints are, that it would have been great if it covered their entire recording career up to 2000 and including such albums as "Wallflowers" and "Echo", but due to record company restraints, this is impossible now. Then, where are great songs like "Out in The Cold" and the holiday favorite "Its Christmas All Over Again". Those would have been icing on the cake, had they been included here. If you are looking for a nice 30+ tracks of Tom & friends highlights this is it, the booklet isn't much, but the music really shines through. Highly Recommended.
