Free Music Notes for Anthology: Through the YearsFree Music Review: The Heartbreakers: best American band of the last 30 years, bar none Hit: 5 Stars
I remember buying "Greatest Hits" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the early '90s, thinking it was probably the best CD I had ever owned. In many ways, I still believe that to be true. However, this compilation of Heartbreakers material, ANTHOLOGY, is just as good, and even more definitive.
The sound is remastered and crisp, the packaging top notch.
It's near impossible to put together a collection that will include everyone's highlights, and certainly there are some songs missing here that I would have included, for instance "King's Highway" and "A Face in the Crowd." But those are minor errors, and this collection easily covers the best of the best of the band's years at MCA Records. (They are now signed to Warner.) If you can listen to "Greatest Hits" all the way through without skipping tracks, you will be able to do the same with this collection, while enjoying more songs and looking deeper into their back catalog for some of those long lost gems (like "Straight Into Darkness" and "A Woman In Love"). It's worth the price!
Here's hoping Warner begins to collect the best (so far) of Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers while recording for their label.
Free Music Review: Sweet Memories, Radio Classics, and Lots of Good Old Rock and Roll Hit: 5 Stars
This is an excellent retrospective chronicling Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' magnificent 30-year career. They are truly one of the best rock bands of all time, featuring superb melodies, awesome guitar playing and solos, catchy choruses and Petty's unmistakable, heartfelt vocals. From the bluesy, infectious 1976 hit "Breakdown" to the laid-back, wistful, harmonica-laced "Mary Jane's Last Dance", every track on here is memorable, soothing, and infectious, great music to sing along to and cheer yourself up with. There are so many different tempos, styles, sounds, and genres to be found on these two discs, making it an eclectic, satisfying mix. I keep discovering new gems that I get hooked on. On a personal level, several of these tracks are sweet, nostalgic trips down memory lane for me, such as the sweeping, majestic "Into the Great Wide Open" and the cool, slow-burning "All or Nothin'". If you enjoy this collection, you should definitely check out Petty's 1994 solo effort "Wildflowers", another outstanding set of music. In short, Anthology: Through The Years is a plentiful helping of classic rock and roll. Great stuff!
Free Music Review: Great for "Casual Fans" Hit: 5 Stars
I've been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever since they hit the radio airwaves back in the late seventies. I remember going to neighboorhood party's during the summer of 1978 (I was in Junior High) and Refugee was in the Top 40, gettin' blasted through the speakers.
Subsequently, over the years, I have purchased every one of Tom's and the Boy's cd's. I still consider myself just a casual fan. I simply like the hits off each cd, with a few extras thrown in by personal taste. Anyway, the majority of these discs are from the early '90's. Not the best sound quality. And, it takes some time and effort to load each disc in my itunes and pick just the songs that I want. The solution?
Buy this 2-disc Anthology. It's a great price. It's sounds good. And all your favorite Petty tunes are right there, conveniently in one place, uh...or two. I dropped them into my iPod, and haven't looked back since.
Now all I have to do is get The Last DJ and The Highway Companion, and I'm done.
Free Music Review: Great collection... Hit: 5 Stars
This one makes the "Greatest Hits" almost obsolete for the most part and has "Stop Draggin My Heart Around" and "A Woman in Love" which had not been on the hits package. If you have "Playback" (they should package the DVD in with that one).
The only fault is that Petty has put out great music since his MCA days on "Wildflower" and "Echo"(You Don't Know How it Feels, You Wreck Me, It's Good To Be King, Room at the Top, Free Girl Now, About to Give Out) and "The Last DJ" and the soundtrack to "She's the One" that have their moments of greatness (Walls, the Beck cover, Last DJ, Dreamville, You and Me, Have Love Will Travel) all of which would make a fine home on a future anthology (when Petty either retires or if the 2 record companies put out a full career retrospective).
This collection is a great one for the holidays for those that love their classic rock, and something to listen on long road trips.. You can't go wrong with anything that has "American Girl" and "Breakdown" on it IMHO.
Free Music Review: Awesome album Hit: 5 Stars
Although Tom Petty has already been rock & rolling for a few decades, but this is actually the first time that I listened to any of his classic rock hits. Tom petty and the Heartbreakers' album "Anthology - through the years" collects the best hits of the artist in two discs. In this album, I found an artist uses many different styles to perform and present his work, from melancholy blues, sensual ballads, to rousing rock and roll. It shows the talents of the artist and the reason for him being the classic rock star of the time. Simple and melodic guitar chords accompanied with the calm and uncomplicated rhythm, "Free falling" is one of the soft rock ballads that I love the most from this collection. "Jammin' me" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" are both great tracks from the album that shows what Petty is most well-known for - Rock & Roll. Overall, I think the album is a great collection of classic rock and for the avid Petty fans; this album should be the must-own.
