Free Music Review: Full speed ahead
Hit: 5 Stars

The opening blistering rocker Refugee shows well and good Petty had fully arrived. After a big legal battle with MCA records, after the Heartbreakers contract had been sold and the paranoia surrounding their third in the making album, which had to be kept hidden from the record company for fear of being seized, along with the possibility of it never coming out anyway. It's all in this one album, the frustration and the immense inspiration. A great batch of songs, not just great but a masterful batch of songs.

Petty had sounded angry in the past for sure, he had something to prove, but on this album he's more than ever after what he had to deal with. Alot of dislusionment with show business and the whole idea of whether or not you got what it takes to really breakthrough. Regufee pulls that all in for one hell of a rocking song, the stabs of organ, the guitar work and the sneering vocals all showcase a band playing for their lives. Here Comes My Girl, showcasing that truely classic drum sound, along with Even The Losers sort of return back to that roots style story telling Petty did so well only with more flair than in the past. Shadow of a Doubt, another anthemic sing a long style rocker full of sound and Century City just overflow with energy and lyrical sage-ness. These songs are saying something. Century City of course being as Petty has stated, where the lawyers live in Hollywood. He's showing that uncertaintity in the opening lines. Sometimes hes not sure what to do, but he puts it all down on paper and makes something of it. Of course the major breakthrough hit was Don't Do Me Like That, the snappy sing along radio favorite that was actually an old Mudcrutch song, orignally not to be included on the album but its basic track had been layed down a few times and it was one of the half asleep engineers in the control room during a brainstorm session which suggested .."what about that dont do me like that song?!".

After 6 tracks the album finally slows down a bit, and its a great thing. You Tell Me with that whirling guitar intro strolls along with its lyrics rooted in relationship uncertaintity and mystery. It's another great underlooked track. It's stacked and layered guitar bridge being the highlight moment. What Are You Doin' In My Life returns the album back to its fast and no holds barred pace, the chorus catchy as hell once more, even if you dont know the verse, when he sings 'what are you doin in my life/i didnt ask for you' , you will too. The album closes on a slow and sentimental note with the slide guitar/organ driven ballad Louisiana Rain, full of compelling imagrey it ends the album on a different note rather than a rocking one which isnt seen often.

What more can be said about this record? It was a huge hit and rightfully so, put Petty on the map and is to this day considered his masterwork. Jimmy Iovine of course who had worked with Sprinsgteen and Patti Smith was brought in to try and give Petty a sound he hadnt had before. He knew of the mythical rock n roll "3rd album". Which is usually make or break and they laid everything out. Working to a feverish perfection to achieve what they heard in their heads. Petty had a sound here he hadnt had before, fuller, tighter, in favor of the rough and loose production to his previous 2 albums. It was a muscular sound and 30 years later one can hear how it's powerful punch sound was just itching to be heard by everyone. Theres just no way this album wasnt gonna be a hit. Every song on here still remains a high water mark and this album is one of rocks best most potent works.

Damn the Torpedoes Poster

Damn The Torpedoes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' third album (and first on Backstreet/MCA,) proved to be the breakthrough for the singer-songwriter-guitarist and his band (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch). The album was released on October 19, 1979, after a highly publicized lawsuit in which Petty made a groundbreaking stand for artist rights, refusing to be sold by one record company to another without his consent. Damn The Torpedoes became the group's first Top 10, remaining at #2 for seven weeks (only Pink Floyd's The Wall kept it from the top). It sold over 5-million copies, and had 3 top 40 hits and 4 top 5 rock-radio hits. The album was an immediate critical success, with Rolling Stone declaring Damn The Torpedoes "the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album we have all been waiting for." Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the album reached double platinum quickly and catapulted the band to arena performances where they played such classic cuts as the infectious Top 10 hit "Don't Do Me Like That," blistering rockers "Refugee" and "Here Comes My Girl," and the exhilarating "Even The Losers." Bursting with full speed ahead American rock `n' roll, the album brought together rock, folk, country and blues in what has become Petty and the Heartbreakers' signature style. The release garnered Petty his first Rolling Stone Magazine cover in February 1980. He has appeared on four covers since then. In 2003, nearly 25 years after its release, Rolling Stone honored Damn The Torpedoes on its list of "the greatest albums ever made," and in 2002 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, during their first year of eligibility. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are one of the very few artists to score a top five record on the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades.
Though easily as consistent as their first two releases, it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' third release, Damn the Torpedoes, that catapulted Petty and company into the first rank of American rock acts. It's not hard to understand why. With a slate of driving songs destined to become FM staples ("Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "Even the Losers," "Don't Do Me Like That"), it's an album that plays much like half a greatest-hits collection. Fusing a rootsy sensibility heavy with Dylan and Byrds affectations with his own pop instincts (honed by early stints with Mudcrutch and Dwight Twilley) and coupling them with one of rock's most consistently underrated powerhouses, the Heartbreakers, Petty's throwback traditionalism oddly found him riding the crest of the new wave in the late '70s. All tracks on this new edition have been sonically upgraded via state-of-the-art digital remastering. --Jerry McCulley
