Free Music Review: Tom & The Heartbreakers Aren't Caught Napping

Now Hard Promises is an excellent album,don't get me wrong. But it was the negative reviews for this that made me want to seek out this album. Not just to play devils advocate but I wanted to hear for myself what the fuss was all about. And after hearing it I can't find any big problems with it except that is a bit different from his other releases up to this point. It's not that his sound or production style has changed in any serious kind of way but this album is a bit more rhythmically and to a degree stylistically diverse than anything they'd done previous. Petty was obviously to expand himself within his framework and while the results might not have been to everyones taste it's still a fine album for Tom Petty and his excellent band.

The major hit of course was the heavily synth inflected new wave styled "You Got Lucky" and as another review pointed out it's by no means typical of this album. Otherwise this is a very hard rocking record,kicking off with Stonsey riff heavy hard bluesy pop/rock such as "A One Story Town","Deliver Me",'Change Of Heart","The Same Old You" and "Between Two Worlds". All the same Petty's gift for strongly crafted melodicism is firing on all cylinders on these songs even as the guitars are rowdier and the songs rock a lot harder. Some other wonderful stylistic changes come in the form of "We Stand A Chance", a strong song that should've actually been a huge hit with it's Hall & Oates-like Philly influenced rock n soul stype sound and the slinkly bluesy groove of "Straight Into Darkness". As with most of the music on this album there's a late night "secret rendesvous" flavor to the set which makes it not only great rock n roll but great cruising music as well.

Although my own musical tastes tend to veer more in the direction of soul,funk and jazz (which is evident also in my reviews of rock albums such as this) I have long since had a strong admiration for Petty's musical endevours and creative character. True while he records today and his sound hasn't really changed in it's intention a whole lot he and the Heartbreakers definately possess that spark. All the greats in rock had it-The Beatles,Rolling Stones,Byrds,Chuck Berry,Bruce Springsteen and even UK contemporaries such as Squeeze and XTC,who both borrowed the best elements of the past to create a music that sounded fresh and new every time. And most importantly,like them Petty new the value of quality production values that sounded great blaring from the radio or headphones. So on all levels this is a very strong album for him and his band.
