Free Music Notes for Long After DarkFree Music Review: Respectable Meat & Potatoes Rock - I'm no fan, but . . . Hit: 3 Stars
. . . I think this forum is pretty useless if it's only used by fans to pay tribute to the music they love. We all could definitely use some more objective opinions around here.
Petty and co. are good musicians, specializing in solid, unchallenging/run-of-the-mill rock n' roll, which is fine if that's what you're into. If you aren't bored to tears with what they play over and over and over on classic rock radio, then this album will likely appeal to you. These guys hit the right notes and Petty has an agreeable rock n' roll whine.
LONG AFTER DARK consists entirely of standard Petty mid-tempo rockers save for the mellow, bongo-laden final cut. Frankly, I find the album a bit boring. Yes, there are keyboards, but only "You Got Lucky" bears a passing resemblance to New Wave. There's certainly nothing angry or edgy enough here to appeal to punk rockers, unlike what was dubiously suggested by one of the paid "professional" writers on this forum (a useless profession if there ever was one, but it must be nice to make money that way).
With really outstanding artists, it's always fun to plumb their back catalogue, but with Petty, I'm perfectly happy to hear just his GREATEST HITS collection, whereas these collections are often frustrating affairs for artists with a lot more to offer. "You Got Lucky," an ancient song from my early grade school years (which used to annoy me back in the day but it kinda grew on me), is clearly the stand-out track, so it's appropriate that it's the only one culled for GREATEST HITS. I really do like Tom Petty, but this album doesn't do much for me. He has made better albums, but I stand by my view that his GREATEST HITS covers the essentials.
Free Music Review: Don't overlook it Hit: 3 Stars
Perhaps the most straight ahead rock lp the Heartbreakers ever produced and a great tour for anyone that saw it (I saw the very last show of the tour, in LA, the last show of a 5-show stand.) A great show despite the fact that Tom was clearly releaved in annoucing it was his last working night of that tour, which lasted a year (imagine being on the road that long.) They opened with A One Story Town and closed with Even the Losers (don't ask why I remember that after all these years. The only part of the show that dragged was the excessively long version of Breakdown.) As for the LP, there are some gems here, Deliver Me, Straight Into Darkness, Between Two Worlds and I still like Change of Heart and the opening track. The single, however, has not grown on me over the years (could just be that Benmont is up too loud in the mix? I think it'd have aged better had he just played a Hammond.) The video for the single, too, was a letdown from what came before (like the Beatles, the Heartbreakers didn't need a plot or storyline in a video, just them performing was cool enough. When you havea cool band, in cool threads, that's all you need. Keep it simple. They became abysmal when Tom started hanging with that weenie Dave Stewart.) Call me a purist, but to me, this is the last gotta have in their catalog.
Free Music Review: Long after dark is 80's Petty Hit: 3 Stars
Oh ya know when are we going except albums from the time period it was in.The Eighties was just that, keyboards, synthesizers, snare drums and commercialism.LONG AFTER DARK is simply a follow up to Damn The Torpedos with a more poppy zing.I grew up through that period this album released 1982.Tom took two years in between in making albums and not like today its get it out quick. The songs like Change of Heart and Deliver Me are great and You Got Lucky which MTV played it to death{cool video though} are just a reminder that this station boosted alot of stars.Although this is a forgotten album us 40 year ols out there remember this time period quite well.Right Guys and Girls you know who you are!!! The Eighties had alot of good stuff out there and bad too. There isn't too many classics left people whether they're too old or dead,Tom Petty doesn't have to make a name for himself he already did that on Damn the Torpedos in 79, thats 26 years ago.Just one last note I agree with one of the writers Wildflower was a boring album but to many its gold.I love Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen in fact thats all I play where Born in the USA is a great frizbie. The point is and Sly from the group Family stone sang it best Different strokes for different folks.
Free Music Review: Follow-Up to "Hard Promises" Hit: 3 Stars
After the quantum leap of "Damn The Torpedoes" and it's harder-rocking follow-up, "Hard Promises," Petty was worn out from interminable touring and pressure, and both are apparent here. The production takes a harder edge than it's predecessors but one can't help wondering if the synthesizer-laden overtones are taking the forefront to fill creative holes in Petty's songwriting, rather than serve as compact fill to Petty's usually first-rate song craft. You Got Lucky's intro was lifted from The Cars' "Gimme Some Slack," and the rest of the CD is below-par for the gone-gator Floridian.
