Free Music Review: It's The Best He Can Do
Hit: 5 Stars

Playback is a collection of Tom Petty's finer moments and forgotten moments. That said, if you like Tom Petty you will like this box set. He recreates his career in the first three CDs. In the first three CDs you start to see his musical depth, his straight on rock style, his Southern grace, and his country overtones. The next three CDs combine all his not so great moments. These are the songs that didn't make the albums, the songs that were on the B-sides. The funny thing is, the songs contained within these three Cds are at the least of listening quality. Tom Petty is one of the few artists in rock who could ever hold your attention with over five hours of music. He is one of the few artists who didn't reach his creative limits as he released this box set and has continued going strong. As one of his songs is titled, he deserves "The Best of Everything."

Free Music Review: "Playback" is awesome.
Hit: 5 Stars

Even if you have every album Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever made, you will find plenty of great tracks in "Playback" that you have probably never heard before. Lots of great covers, b-sides, and previously unreleased originals. One question, though: Since they weren't included in "Playback", when is Tom going to release a recording with "Drivin' Down to Georgia" and "Lost Without You"? He's been playing these songs in concert since 1993, and they are mentioned in the "Playback" booklet, but they've never been released. I've heard both of these songs performed live, and they're awesome. Anyway, If you like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, buy "Playback". You won't be dissappointed.- A.R.

Free Music Review: Cool Collection
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a good collection of Petty's random recordings. A lot of them are songs that undoubtedly came out of jam sessions. Highlights include a slowed-down live version of "King's Highway." A good collection if you're a Petty fan, but if you're looking for a cheaper alternative, go for "Wildflowers." END

Free Music Review: I Loved it!
Hit: 5 Stars

I wasn't what you'd call a BIG Tom Petty fan. I enjoyed a lot of his music that was played on FM stations and I would hear obscure tracks once in a while that I'd think "Wow, that's Tom Petty?" So when I shelled out the big bucks for the "Playback" cd's I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy all 6 of the discs. The book with the history and interviews was extremely interesting. I have a new respect for musicians, especially when they can stick together for 20 years and still create great music.
