I'd been meaning to get some Tom Russell for a long time, and thanks to a friend's Amazon gift certificate I did just that! I hope to buy more of his stuff. I wish I had heard this album at various points in my educational experience to bring people's story to life. Sure, I saw "How The West Was Won", and even heard Bob Dylan's "With G-d On Our Side." The amazing thing about this album is that it inspires in me my Russian and Lithuanian Jewish pride, and it still teaches me about the growth of the United States. Not enough was said about the Norwegian and Irish contributions to our society. Obviously, these songs engage on a personal and musical level too. I was especially taken with the guitar playing and fiddle. Thank you very much, Mr. Russell. It was a little late but it made my 41st birthday a lot happier!

Texan singer-songwriter Tom Russell has recorded more than a dozen albums of original material, but none quite as unique as this evocative "immigrant song cycle," which paints a stark picture of early American lifestyles. Loosely based on Russell's own family history, this folk opera employs Irish and Norwegian musical elements as well as sounds drawn straight from the dustbowl. Sterling vocal contributions from the likes of Iris DeMent and Dave Van Ronk guide us through several generations of outcasts and pioneers.
