How do mere mortals like us even approach creating words and sentences to describe the genius behind this album? They don't suffice. Before I heard this one, the only other Tom Waits I'd heard was Rain Dogs, which I liked immensely. Great stuff from tom waits, a variety of styles. 'straight to the top' is done in 2 different styles. magic. 'innocent when you dream' was used at the end of the film 'Smoke' starring Harvey Keitel,Forrest Whitakker and William Hurt. It's not as 'alternative' as 'rain dogs', but still it rules. This cd is one of the best collections of songs from a true artist that you can get.Waits hits all aspects of his music on this album and almost every song should get a second listen.Get a drink and kick back this is a treat.Cold Cold ground is one of the most moving songs that has ever been recorded.Free Music Review: My favorite, too....

yeah. this is the one. some of the most evocative music (and words) these ears've ever heard. if the human race evolves enough not to destroy itself in a nuclear war, future generations will realize that THIS was the best Tom Waits album (at least before 2001!). peace.

this is a stroke of geneous. i loved it the first time i listened and i must have listened to it hundreds of times since. It's an album that, like the Black Rider and Bone Machine, i'm afraid of listening to. turn of the lights and freak yourself out.
