Free Music Notes for Mule Variations AlbumFree Music Review: Ya got to get behind the mule!!!!!! Hit: 5 StarsI consider myself one of the luckiest human beings on earth today. I have just acquired an advanced copy of MULE VARIATIONS! Has Tom topped Bone Machine? The Question can't even be asked. You can't top perfection, It's a sin that one goes straight to hell for. Mule Variations I HOPE, will try to cast out the devil and beat The Glory of Bone Machine (Frank's wild years, Swordfish trombones too) to emerge triumphant, standing Atop Everest and waving its fist while yelling ; "I'm the best album of all time!!" I'm gonna give it another ten listenings in the next couple of days and I know that with increasing familiarity each song's individuality will begin to emerge so I'll let you know if it kicks ass. What a treat of a task. I'm thrilled to have this adventure before me. After just one spin though, I've enjoyed the varied taste of delicacies from this five star grease pit. **Ya got yer standard colorized dust bowl images featuring weirdoes, murderers and lots of cool percussion. (you got to get behind the mule in the morning and plow). **Ya got yer heavy dose of twisted gospel tunes; (Come down off the cross 'cause we could use the wood) (It's got to be a chocolate Jesus make me feel good inside got to be a chocolate Jesus keep me satisfied) **Ya got yer Captain Beefheart kick ass ball breaker; FILIPINO BOX SPRING HOG. It's a darn shame that Don Van Vilet isn't making music anymore but Thank god Tom Waits has picked up the torch and won the frickin marathon for all of us. **Ya got yer evil twin to THE OCEAN DOESN'T WANT ME with WHAT'S HE BUILDING IN THERE? The tale of Tim McVeigh's nosey next door neighbor. For every tooth filing, nail grinding moment on this album there's the ballad that can reduce even Hitler to a blubbering sentimental lump of frail human vulnerability. The last three songs compliment each other in a beautiful, mystical way; FILIPINO BOX SPRING HOG being a foodaholick frenzy. Then after dinner and a few drinks, mortality comes up around the campfire. TAKE IT WITH ME being a sweet optimistic view of death and clinging to the things you love. Then the joyous COME ON UP TO THE HOUSE ends with the welcoming arms of heaven. You know, I'm not a religious man but after my third listening I'm a bit more confident that the universe isn't such a cold place after all. Has Tom become the Tom Waits machine? well.................yes. But it's a machine that stands along side human kind's greatest mechanical creations; The Saturn rocket, The great pyramid, the garden weasel. The Tom Waits machine however has one thing that the others don't; HEART. This dose of medicine only comes along once every five years or so and sure........it tastes kind of the same, but it sure is good for what ales ya
