Tom Waits uses his lyrics to paint pictures, not as an impressionist would, but as a realist. He doesn't see someone dying their hair; he doesn't see them dying their hair in a bathroom; they're dying their hair in the bathroom of a Texaco. His gargled-razorblade-like voice fit the lyrics into sprawling yowl and growl that is a perfect match to his strangled, jolting, blues-twanged and sometimes invariably smooth (Walkin' Spanish) instrumental train. Ribot is fabulous (as usual) and Richards adds some attitude to a few tracks. It took three full listens for me to grasp the album for what it is: An artist doing what he does and doing it with tattered elegance that can't be taught or pursued.
