Free Music Notes for Rain DogsFree Music Review: Quirky Fun Hit: 5 Stars
I learned of Tom Waits in the last year and thought "where have you been all my life?"
This album is great, quirky fun. The poetry is fabulous. Some of the songs carry me away somewhere while others have me bouncing around, giggling and smiling like a ten-year old girl. The only one Waits song that could make this album more perfect would be the addition of Step Right Up.
I must warn Waits newbies that this is musical-art, not anything like you'd find in the Top 40. My fiance (a top-40-phile; poor dear) HATES this album with a flaming passion. He looks like he wants to claw his own face off every time I put it on, he also hates The Red Elvises, it's sad really.
If you like things like experimental jazz and non-linear poetry I think you'll really adore this album. If you think Casey Kasem is god's gift to radio, you'll probably want to skip this one.
Free Music Review: "Oh how we danced..." Hit: 5 Stars
Was flipping through a page for Bruce Dickinson's solo albums and I found this in the "related" section, so I had to drop in here quickly and give my two cents.
Anyways, when I first heard this album, it was my first Waits album, and it was very different! Yet I inevitably loved it, his voice was very unique and easy on the ears. Great lyrics too, something I've never heard before as well. Just the opening lines of "Singapore" was enough to get me hooked. Downtown Train is definitely my favorite song on the album on here, and some other great classic tracks include Gun Street Girl, Clap Hands, Diamonds and Gold, and Blind Love. He's definitely better than a lot of the crap we hear on the radio and TV nowadays.
So anyways, if you want something different, be sure to give Waits a try, he has a very interesting voice and some of his lyrics are amazing.
Free Music Review: Brilliant! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this cd on a whim knowing nothing at all about Tom Waits. So when I put this in my cd player, I had no idea at all what to expect. From the first second this played till the very end, I found myself completely enraptured by each and every song. There is nothing on this album that disappointed me in anyway and I have since began to order and search for his other stuff. This guy is a true artist. He sings from the heart in his unusual, compelling voice I am now addicted to. I just find it sad that it took me this long to discover his music. His words are incredibly brilliant as he tells each story. I can honestly say I loved each and every song. Discovering this album proves how much one can find when they delve into music not played on the radio. This shows how incredibly inferior mainstream music can be. Simply put, I loved it!
Free Music Review: Quintessential Hit: 5 Stars
I would like to be Tom Waits for five minuits, just to experience what it's really like to be so shamelessly brilliant. "Rain Dogs" is unquestionably one of Waits' best albums (not that he has ever made an even mediocre one), and it's on my list for the 10 best albums ever made. This is the one to choose if you want to introduce Tom Waits for a newcomer. First time I heard music from the album was at a cinema, watching Jim Jarmush's magnificent "Down by Law". It goes without saying that film is a must see for fans of Tom Waits, not just because he has a prominent role in it, but because the atmosphere of the entire film fits the universe of Tom Waits like a glove. Seventeen years later, I never get tired of listening to "Rain Dogs". An album like this one is simply more than our sad world deserves.
Free Music Review: A classic in every sense Hit: 5 Stars
One of the greatest albums of all time.. no more, no less. Its hard for me to understand why I like Rain Dogs.. but then again its hard for me to understand why I like Tom Waits so much in the first place.. I guess he is more of an aquired taste to most people, reguardless, this album is an artistic masterpeice. Waits' lyrics are very poetic and abstract as usual.. and musically there is a balance here that most albums of any genre can't accomplish. There is a perfect mix of serious ballads and quirky, fun, polkas (or whatever you call them).
I cant really reccomend this album to anyone who has not heard of or heard Tom Waits.. because this band is rather like Primus in the sense that you either hate it, or love it.. and if you love Tom Waits, then you already have this album.
