Free Music Notes for SwordfishtrombonesFree Music Review: I shot billards with a midget till the rain stopped.. Hit: 5 Stars
So far, this is my favorite Tom Waits album. His lyrics still deal with the less popular sides of the city which can be seen in movies such as Robert Altman's Short Cuts, Burkowski's Barfly or even the Coehn brother's The Big Lebowski. The material may sound like his earlier albums, but now Waits is getting into musical madness. The songs have a touch of the avant-garde musically, but it doesn't seem to be done to make a statement or be seen as artistic. The unique nature of the music perfectly compliments the subject material of the songs. A great album any music fan should own.Shore Leave is one of Tom Waits best songs.
Free Music Review: One of my favorites Hit: 5 Stars
This album, along with Raindogs, is one of my all time favorites. It is completely original -- it sounds like no one else. It can be a little sentimental, but the sentimentality seems real. (When he sings, in "Soldier's Things," "This one is for bravery, and this one is for me," he sounds to me like a war widow, not a rock star pretending to be a war widow.) It's also a complete departure from his previous album -- a kind of bravery in a popular artist that I think people should respect. Virtually everything since Swordfishtrombones is a worthwhile album, but this is the place to start.
Free Music Review: Heller. Say it with me. Hit: 5 Stars
I've had a cassette copy of this album since college. From day one it was noisy and scratchy, I take a pervese pleasure in the idea that Tom would almost prefer it that way. After being a companion on countless roadtrips the tape had become so worn that I had to replace it. The CD was like hearing it for the first time, there are sonic nuances I've missed for years. This is an iconic work from an American original. The dark pictures he paints in songs like Shore Leave and Soldier's Things are bracing and bitterly refreshing in an age of increasingly shallow and meatless pop culture prefab "musicians".
Free Music Review: #7 on tlr's "Top Thirteen Albums To Be Buried With" list Hit: 5 Stars
A Masterpiece!Eerie in it's beauty. Wondrous in scope. Hard hitting. Poignant. Funny. Downright brilliant. Listening to Tom Waits is, with this album in particular, about as close to viewing a film without actually doing so as you can get. The images that Tom conjures are about as vivid as a Rembrandt painting with stark, back alley realism that causes you to either shake your head in disbelief or nod in affirmation. Hypnotic. A must have. Highlights: too many to mention. This is his milestone.
Free Music Review: Bizarre Music Brillance Hit: 5 Stars
Tom Waits first album of his trilogy is a classic. Its so strange that you will have to listen to it a few times to get the meaning of the record. Some people hate his voice. I love it. He is probably the most unrecognized songwriters of his time. This record also has some great music on it. Favorites include 16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six, Town With No Cheer, Swordfishtrombone,Soldier's Things, and Gin Soaked Boy. The instrumentals and other songs are also good. Highly recommended.
