Free Music Notes for Center StageFree Music Review: Simply The Best There Is Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of Tommy Emmanuel for about 20 years. Over that time he has continuously improved, which is amazing since the first time I heard him it was just one track on a guitar players compilation CD and he stood out from the others like a diamond among rocks. I've been fortunate in recent years to see him perform in the tiny "Little Fox" theater in Redwood City, California where he was only about ten feet away. He will captivate you, but not just with his vituousity. He tells stories of his journey that are mesmerizing. You are struck by his obviously genuine love of people and his ability to relate to and entertain them. The stories he tells of his life are delightful and very memorable. I feel like I know him.
In "Center Stage" he transcends all his previous recordings in terms of his truly unbelievable technical skills, his ability to persuade you that there HAS to be more than one person creating all those sounds, and the sheer beauty and magnitude of what is hitting your eardrums. I just finished listening to "Center Stage" all the way through. I was listening through a Bose headset on an airplane. I missed the beverage cart.
This album, with the exception of the excellent but distracting four tracks that add a harmonica player, Bob Littell, (I like my Tommy all by himself) is the best recorded work I've heard of him. I highly recommend getting either the CD or DVD version. You won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Beyond Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
I was introduced to the music of Tommy Emmanuel while lying in a hospital bed and feeling depressed as I flipped through various channels on the television. The flipping came to a halt when I heard for the first time the music of Tommy Emmanuel. He was playing, as I later found out, Mombasa. I had caught the televised taped concert performance of "Center Stage" in progress. The gusto Emmanuel puts into his performance was invigorating. I was hooked; I had to have this music for my own.
I want to share the fantastic music Tommy creates so I have shown this DVD to everyone who comes to visit me. Tommy Emmanuel captures what it really means to play the acoustic guitar with expression to the fullest. It is astonishing that he is able to play such a different amount of musical sounds with a guitar. Usually on a concert DVD or CD there are one or two pieces I do not care for, the exception is "Center Stage," every piece was incredible.
The quality of the sound and the picture are excellent on the DVD. This is one DVD that I find myself returning to watch and never tire of it. I bought both the DVD and CD. While it is much more entertaining to watch and listen to the DVD, the CD allows me to take this extraordinary music to listen to while in my car. I highly recommend this DVD to everyone. I would like to give ten stars to this review, but alas the highest the review will accept is five.
Free Music Review: Tommy fan for life! Hit: 5 Stars
Having owned The Mystery, I took a chance with Tommy's live CD. I'm usually not a fan of live recordings but this one is different. The difference is that when we listen to a studio recording, we probably realize that many takes were involved to achieve the final "best" take to put on CD. Many live recordings fall short of getting the feel, the timing, the quality.....this one is different in that regard. Tommy plays complex passages with ease, showing that he is truly a master guitar player. I am blown away at the speed of his rhythm playing on Tall Fiddler, it's super human, beyond what all these metal shredders could even come close to. The only part of the CD I don't care for....even though it is incredible....are the first 4 songs on the second CD where he does songs with a harp player. But that is just me, not a big fan of harmonica. But if you want to experience guitar playing that is just so complex, beautiful, melodic and even spiritual....grab this CD. Best music for the money I spent.
Free Music Review: Captures the Brilliance of One of the Best Hit: 5 Stars
I was fortunate enough to hear Tommy Emmanuel live in concert in May of this year (2008). From the opening notes to the last encore, he was one of the most brilliant musicians I have ever heard.
His technical skill is amazing, but he's about more than flash. He plays with a wide range of deep human emotion, and does it all with great wit.
This recording captures the essence of that experience. It's a live concert recording that finds him at his best, showing off his skills, and connecting and communicating with the audience. It may sound like hyperbole, but this recording has rocketed onto my list of my favorite recordings of all time.
If you haven't heard Tommy, this recording is the place to start!
Free Music Review: Another piece of art by Tommy Emmanuel Hit: 5 Stars
"Center Stage" is the latest "piece of art" by the magnificent guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel. All the executions and arrangements are amazing and never trivial. The sound quality is excellent, although "Center Stage" is a live recording.
The tracklist is enriched by unpublished songs as "The Finger Lakes" and traditional songs (Amazing Grace, Georgia On My Mind, House of the Risin' Sun). Some executions of Tommy's songs are impressive: "Initiation" (terrific) or "Mombasa". Tommy is a real "one-man-band" and in "Nine Pound Hammer" shows to be able to sing and play guitar at the same time incredibly well.
For the umpteenth time Tommy Emmanuel demonstrates to be already a "piece of hystory" of music.
