I'm not a guitar player, although at the ripe old age of 54, I have (by Tommy Emmanuel's playing) been inspired to buy a book (on Travis Style fingerpicking) to start learning more than the basic chords all of us children of the 60's learned.
I AM a lifelong musician, and a fan of great guitar playing. Over the years I've had opportunity to see and hear some great players of various styles, from Andres Segovia to Norman Blake to Doc Watson to Stephen Bennett. I was at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in Dallas a couple of years ago. Most of the greats were there--the list of performers at Sunday's marathon 12-hour concert in the Cotton Bowl was amazing: Clapton, B.B.King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, James Taylor, Jimmy Vaughan, Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, Joe Walsh, Z.Z. Top, Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, Eric Johnson, Hubert Summerlin, on and on and on. After that day, I felt like I had heard, over the years, the best guitar playing--acoustic and electric--to be heard on this particular planet (including, of course, "Esteban's" infomercials;-) Then, last February, I finally had a chance to see Tommy Emmanuel live. What this man does with a guitar is perceptably different from anything I have ever seen or heard. His personality infuses his playing--joyful, eight-year-old-kid-running-through-a-field-of-summer-flowers playing. His chops are beyond belief. My son's comment: "He has complete freedom--he can play anything he can think." The real mindblower of it all is that he has so much fun playing. Seeing T.E. live is a spiritual experience with a heavy emphasis on joy.
This new c.d. is, as with previous recordings, a more mellow experience than his live performances. It is still, though, an amazing musical experience. Buy it. And buy the new DVD (you will appreciate the c.d.'s vocal with Elizabeth Watkins more after you see the DVD). And buy the old DVD (even terrible production values can't disguise T.E.'s amazing gifts). Buy "Endless Road" and "Only." And for the sake of your soul, see Tommy live. You will be a better person for all of it.
