Are you ready for some balls to the wall rock and roll? If you answered yes, then you must buy this album.
Tommy Shaw's third solo album was quite a departure from his previous A&M releases (of which WHAT IF is my all time favorite album.) AMBITION is just that, raw energy, intensity and direction. Terry Thomas may have over-produced the end result, but could hardly be criticized for such a fantastic piece of rock and roll.
SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT and ARE YOU READY FOR ME are two of my favorite Shaw-penned anthems while the incredibly soulful EVER SINCE THE WORLD BEGAN exemplifies everything that is amazing about music. (Note: this fabulous song was written by Jim Peterik instead of Tommy.)
Tommy once remarked to me that he was "very messed up back then" as he wrote and recorded AMBITION and he soon there after found himself in rehabilitation and struggling with his musical future.
Tommy joined forces with Ted Nugent for two splendid records but (while both DAMN YANKEES and DON'T TREAD may have some better Tommy Shaw tunes) but neither ever came close to rocking as hard, or as rebelliously, as AMBITION.
Once again Tommy wrote with hints of semi-autobiographical introspection but for the one and only time in his career, the base of the songs are stories and tales. A DANGEROUS GAME, OUTSIDER and LAY THEM DOWN are amazing hard rockin' tracks that might characterize this aspect of his writing.
A listener could have a fabulous ride just trying to decipher which songs were taken from his life in 1987 and which were not... but such evaluation would be a distraction for the listener from what is a great collection of tunes.
All you need is... "AMBITION... nobody's gonna hold you back."
