Free Music Notes for Tennille Sings Big BandFree Music Review: Close Encounters of a Swing Kind Hit: 3 StarsThere was a time before war was cold when jazz was hot and big bands blew soft and sweet and lovers dared. Toni Tennille gets close but this isn't the one. For fans of Ms Tennille you'll want to love this but you'll never get closer than like. The songs are okay, but the arrangements fail. Ms Tennille has one of the richest and most powerful voices of all the comtemporary singers but on this CD she never gets to cut loose and let it rip like she did when The Captain and Tennille cut nothing but hits.
It was the humor of Ms Tennille's hits that made them classics and the fun of those songs is missing from this CD.
Ms Tennille, try this again but have more fun. Those songs of the thirties and forties that everyone loves so much are made better by letting the fun out.
The double entendre of Ms Tennille's earlier recording Dixie Hummingbird was right on the mark. There are many other tunes that could use a double dose of Ms Tennille's saucy sense of sin and swing.
If you like Toni Tennille this one works but it isn't what you'd like from a broad with such class.
Free Music Review: toni stings big bands... Hit: 1 Starstoni only hurts these great swing arrangemnents with her powerfu lsting of a singing voice, bad vocals...
Free Music Review: big band and toni don't mix like a cocktail Hit: 2 Starsa good cocktai lshould have ingredients that mnix. So I gave thsi cd two stars, only because the band is exellent. Tony gets no stars for her lack of singing or swinging. She just doesn't have the swagger or enthusiasm, or swing to pull this off, and since she hired a good jazz band, it just makes her look more unprofessional. Not that she isn't a pro , but she should stick to pop music where it really doesn't matter if you have actual skills and talents.
Free Music Review: A swing-y affair with lovely vocals Hit: 5 StarsIsn't this singer the other half of the duo Captain and Tennille?Sure is. And she can both sing (both croon and belt, mind you) and swing. She has this weary voice that has an attractive husk in it and when she sings songs like "Its Nice To Have A Man Around the House" its like a musical come-on with nothing put-on (pun intended). Her best moments come from things that come naturally like her take of "Pardon My Southern Accent" where her Alabamian accent was used to best advantage, and such words like "y'all," and "Sa-dern" get a Deep South treatment. Lovely. Its great for someone to be idiomatic and still come out musical. She also did a creditable "Life Is Just A Bowl of Cherries" but I hear a Judy Garland echo in it which still works fine considering that its hard to eclipse a song Garland made her own. And her "Almost Like Being in Love" has a mature knowingness in it. Its probably a hard sell to make you buy this woman's album, but in a world where pop stars tackle the standards with no idea what they are singing about, this one's a real keeper.
