Free Music Review: Swing Away With Tony
Hit: 4 Stars

What a pleasant and unexpected surprise this warm and wonderful CD is. At an age when most singers would either be retired or repeating themselves, Tony Bennett sounds invigorated and totally relevant. And brother, does he do these songs justice! Bennett has never had the strongest pop voice around and his range is somewhat limited, yet he possesses the most musical instrument of his or any generation. Pitch perfect, with tone and intonation to spare, his phrasing is immpecably fluid and expressive with none of the overwrought mannerisms many pop stylists develop over time. On "A Swinging Christmas", he displays his remarkable interpretive powers again and again. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" swings with a strong relaxed style, while both "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" bounce with a jazzy flavor that Bennett takes full advantage of. He offers nice, smoky takes on "All I Want for Christmas is You" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" that expand but don't detract from more traditional versions, and he practically reinvents "Silver Bells" with a smooth jazz groove. While "My Favorite Things" is coy in any version and "Christmas Time is Here" is by now an overdone standard, Bennett still makes the most of them and never falters, even with such overripe material. His duet with daughter Antonia, who is not burdened with her father's talent, is still a delightful addition here. This terrific if somewhat obscure Irving Berlin song is a perfect fit for Bennett's mastery and it's great to have another chance to hear such a grand old chestnut.

Throughout "Swinging Christmas", the Count Basie Orchestra makes it known why they are one of the greatest ever, and their musicianly sounds create the perfect bed for that voice. Still, the bottom line is that Tony Bennett sounds decades younger than his 80+ years and continues his career long tradition of knowing exactly what to do with his voice, and then doing it to perfection. No stylized sentimentality here...just a smart, no nonsense, precise and straightforward lesson in what makes a song a song, and a great singer a great singer. A swinging Christmas indeed.
