I really admire Tony Bennett, and I love Count Basie; their albums together, though not the equal of Basie's work with Sinatra, are outstanding...but the engineering/production on this disc is very flat. It reduces the sound of the Basie band to a quasi-karaoke background (it sounds more like a trio than a band); there's no 'richness' in the playing. Since Bennett's voice is understandably thin at this point in his career, the result is a washed-out sound that sounds more like a demo than a finished product. The swinging work sounds better than the ballads, but there needed to be sweetening of both the bass and perhaps the judicious introduction of strings to give this some depth. The Count Basie Orchestra and the ensemble musical arrangements on this album are spot on. You can hear the energy in the big band instrumentals and the intimacy of the jazz ensemble. If only this album were an instrumental.
Unfortunately, the vocals by Tony Bennett are almost painful to listen to. The clipping of notes, the speaking of phrases, and "improv" are all too apparent as he struggles to deliver the vocals with any grace and authority. Twenty years ago, this would have been a fantastic holiday album. Today it's an extreme disappointment.
The better alternatives would be to buy Christmas albums from Frank, Sammy, Dean, Ella, and Tony in their prime.

I don't usually post negative reviews, but this really is a sad recording.
I love Tony Bennett and Christmas music so I recently ordered this cd along with 8 or 9 other cd's of holiday music. On the plus side, the music swings - the arrangements and instrumental performances are very entertaining - but Mr Bennett sounds awful on this recording. I wonder if he listened to this sad affair before it was shipped to the public.
If he did, he owes us all an apology. What a shame!

I was disappointed in the C.D. I did not love the songs although I have another older Christmas CD of Tony's that I do like very much.
Free Music Review: Horrible Overseas Customer Service ! ! !

Ordered this book with Amazon ... had a question about the pricing of my order and received an "oversea" customer service department. The call quality was horrible. the individual did not overlly understand my issue and kept calling Ma'am when I am a male. Corrected him and he apologized by saying "Sorry Ma'am". Very disappointed in Amazon's customer service department ! ! ! Would seriously consider using another ordering website when ordering items now and during the holidays. Asked the gentleman if there was someone in the States who could assist me and he said no "It was all overseas" ....
