From "Time After Time" to "I'll Be Seeing You," this remarkable tribute to Frank Sinatra offers an array of the most-loved Sinatra torch and saloon songs of all-time as interpreted by a legend himself, Tony Bennett. He has the backing of great musicians Ralph Sharon, Paul Langosch and Joe Barbera, collectively known as The Ralph Sharon Trio on piano, bass and drums, respectively.
Listen to Mr. Bennett and the trio as they present these songs either in swinging fashion, or in sentimental approach, but most of all, in so "Perfectly Frank" way. There's every song for your tasteful ears, from the Gershwins, Cole Porter and Johnny Mercer to Rodgers & Hart, Sammy Cahn and Jim Van Heusen. Brilliant songwriters are represented here with their songs of love and romance, and the joy and pain that go with it.
You can't pinpoint any favorites since every song has its own charms. The instrumentations, arrangements, as well as Mr. Bennett's winning interpretations are all top-notch and there's nothing to whine about. I'm particularly delighted with the swingy numbers, "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square," "Day In, Day Out" and "A Foggy Day," and the mellow takes on "Don't Worry 'Bout Me," "Indian Summer" and "I'll Be Seeing You." Ditto with a hauntingly beautiful song penned by Johnny Burke and Jim Van Heusen, "Here's That Rainy Day."
The other side of Mr. Bennett's artistry can be seen at one page of the CD cover - it's Frank Sinatra's portrait wearing his famous hat. He painted the Chairman's profile so perfectly and it is a proof of his being arty. I wish I had that painting hanging in one of the walls of my bedroom!
Listen and enjoy! It's one of the best Sinatra tributes ever recorded. Likewise, this album won the "Best Pop Vocal Performance" at the 1992 Annual Grammy Awards. My congratulations to Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon Trio for a well-deserved recognition.
