Free Music Notes for Tony Bennett Sings The Ultimate American Songbook, Vol. 1Free Music Review: Tony Bennett: The Ultimate American Songbook Hit: 5 Stars
Love this CD! Saw Tony Bennett in concert, and this CD is the icing on the cake.
Free Music Review: Good collection but possibly misleading to some Hit: 4 Stars
The only problem with this anthology (apart from it's being another compilation rather than a unified, single session) is that while it appears to be a perfect complement to the book of piano music, it isn't. The book and the CD have identical titles, photos, fonts, colors, etc.--all of which might lead some purchasers to assume that one mirrors the other. Well, not exactly. The book is basically a collection of lead sheets that may serve some musicians well but is bound to be "more of same" for those who already have fake books, collections of standards, etc. The CD, on the other hand, consists of professionally arranged musical settings that are unique to the particular recording from which the individual performances were taken. If you're a pianist and were hoping to acquire transcriptions of Ralph Sharon's accompaniment supported by recorded demonstrations on the CD, put such thoughts to rest.
Free Music Review: Sorry, Tony--no dice !!! Hit: 3 Stars
Unfortunately, this CD of just some of Tony's hits gets some mighty deceptive packaging--like many other people, I initially thought these were new recordings for a new CD! Not so, I'm afraid. Although Tony is at his best for these songs, the CD merely is a compilation of songs recorded on CD and LP many times over the years.
The CD has several highlights, if you do wish to buy it--but just please understand that these are old recordings packaged in such a way as to lead people to believe that they're buying a CD of Tony's new recordings.
One clear highlight of this CD is "The Very Thought Of You." Tony sings his best; he never misses a note and his voice is full of energy and masculine warmth. The trumpet sounds great to make "The Very Thought Of You" a fine number.
In addition, listen for "The Way You Look Tonight;" this number has a great musical arrangement with percussion and piano; Tony sings this soulfully with all his heart. "That Old Black Magic" again features Tony at his best with the percussion and a jazzy musical arrangement to make this number shine!
"I'll Be Seeing You" showcases Tony's lyrics as he sings this with great sensitivity; and the piano works wonders for this number. "They Can't Take That Away From Me" has a great horn arrangement to complement Tony's strong vocals; and "Taking A Chance On Love" gets the royal treatment from Tony as he belts this out so fine.
The artwork of the liner notes, sadly, gives anyone with eyes the impression that this is a completely new CD. Buyers beware! This is a CD of recordings merely re-hashed for an extra few bucks in Tony's pocket. I am very disappointed.
If you're new to Tony Bennett and want to get to know his artistry better, then buy this as a type of lukewarm retrospective or compilation CD. Tony Bennett fans will be disappointed and hopefully not fooled by this tricky artwork and packaging. "True Blue" Tony Bennett fans should save their money and enjoy the CDs they already own with these very same recordings and more.
Sorry, Tony! No dice!
Two and one-half stars.
Free Music Review: Not what I expected Hit: 3 Stars
I love Tony Bennett and I love or like most of the songs but at the same time I was dissappointed. Can't quite put my finger on why but...dissappointed is still the word I would use to discribe my reaction to this CD. Sorry Tony!
Free Music Review: Is it Live?? Hit: 3 Stars
The audience applauding and Tony praising k.d. lang (whom I adore) detract from an otherwise nice collection.
