Free Music Notes for First Protocol AlbumFree Music Review: Hypnotic..... Hit: 4 StarsTony Remy is one of the finest session guitar players having contributed hugely to the success of Incognito and 'Down To The Bone' among others and played with the likes of Frank McComb.
Anyone with a liking for Incognito and/or the the improvisation electronica band "The Bays" will find this collaboration between one of the UK's most consistently exciting guitar soloists, Tony Remy (who's been thrilling audiences since the mid-1980s, when he rose to attention with his band "Desperately Seeking Fusion", featuring Patrick Clahar, Jason Rebello and Julian Crampton) absolutely indispensable.
Tony has achieved the status of one of the most in demand guitarists in the UK and beyond. His guitar playing alone has graced artists such as Annie Lennox, Herbie Hancock, Craig David, US3, Lonnie Liston-Smith, Nelson Rangell, Maysa and Courtney Pine.
As a producer, he has worked with Karen Ramirez, Noel McKoy and PP Arnold. His writing credits are many and varied including the movie (Mike Leigh's Career Girls).
His first solo album Boof! was released by the US renowned jazz label GRP in 1994.
Remy's previous albums have ranged unaffectedly between funk, blues, jazz and intelligent fusions of all the above; here the emphasis is on a blend of light funk/jazz and house that is hypnotic enough to entrance but also contains sufficient rhythmic and textural variety to reward repeated listening.
Incognito's former keyboard player Graham Harvey and bassist Francis Hylton, all four members of the Bays, Bluey's regular associate drum/percussion maestro Ski Oakenfull, and other usual suspects crop up throughout, but overall, this is a delightfully uncomplicated and unequivocally enjoyable celebration of a highly compatible musical partnership between two great leaders in their field.
This 10 track collaboration with Bluey combines Tony's virtuoso guitar playing with Bluey's immaculate arranging/ songwriting and production.
Thus the twin-guitar interplay of the opening "Beyond Jupiter" jostles with the vocoder-enhanced "The Box".
The latin-inflected, bossa nova tinged "Dans La Mancha" (featuring trumpeter Kevin Robinson), with its eerie trumpet creates an atmospheric backdrop for the boys.
Other standout track: the upbeat grooves and the Benson-like fluidity of "The Other Side Of Me"."Only Child" enjoins a soulful house vibe with an Incognito-ish sound.
It's a grower.
Excellent set that grows better with each play.
