Free Music Review: Spellbinding and hypnotic

This complilation features Tony Rice's jazzier side; his Gordon Lightfoot-styled vocals and Americana-type tunes are absent. Instead, one is treated to spellbinding and hypnotic improvization from Rice and his fellow travellers through the land of "spacegrass". Their technical prowess always serves the music, with the result that one is carried along through a variety of richly colored and contrasting moods... this is the exact opposite of "ear candy" or musical "fast food"; it is a deeply satisfying and captivating banquet. Yet, unlike an actual meal, one may play it over and over with no diminishment of enjoyment. Like David Grisman's original Quintet cd, this is an exemplary creative flowering of the "dawg music" esthetic.
