Free Music Review: Didn't Connect.

This is only my second exposure to Tony Rice. I didn't really care for the first CD I purchased- I played it a couple times and put it away and haven't got it back off the shelf. I don't even remember it's title. I thought I'd try him again with this tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. This one didn't connect with me either. Maybe it's just me. He is a perfectionist at his craft. The production value is high. The musicianship is flawless. I find him only an "ok" vocalist. When it's all said and done, he didn't engage me. In fact, I was bored. The music left me, frankly, wanting to hear Gordon Lightfoot. Take the track, "The Wreck..." I kept waiting for him to hook me in but he didn't. Lightfoot's "Wreck" has elements of mystery, sadness, a sense of loss and doom, etc. It tugs at the listener-it's moving. Rice's version is technically perfect but for me there was no emotion. Based on the other reviews of this CD that claim he is very emotionally expressive, I guess I just don't get it. I don't think I'll be purchasing another Rice CD.
